Great point! I get the whole teenager/hormone thing. If a young rooster is perfect to begin with, I totally agree with trying to work through his aggression issues. I base a lot of my freezer camp policy on the old "three strikes, you're out" philosophy. One fault, I can work...
Pinkchick...thanks for your input. While some roosters do respond and change their evil ways with "encouragement", there are some that simply don't. I'm just trying to determine how much folks account for disposition in their breeders when aggression most definitely can be passed on to...

Thanks for your input, Debbi. That's what I'm trying to figure out with this breed. Let's just say for conversation's sake that someone does have a perfect rooster, but he has an incredibly nasty disposition. Is the disposition of future offspring being disregarded in efforts to...
For all you WONDERFUL Maran gurus...I have a question.
How important is culling for disposition? In other words...should birds with very aggressive behavior and dispositions be culled, even though they may be good quality? I enforce a 0 tolerance policy when it comes to aggressive behavior...
I may be wrong, but I don't think Hennypen is even sure her bird IS a Maran. I interpreted her original post as asking whether or not a BCM can have that color in their feathering...she wasn't really asking whether or not it was a fault. Please correct me if I'm misunderstanding her intent.

At least I know what 1/2 of it is. I think this is a bcm x jersey giant. It has one bright copper laced hackle feather (so far) I'm just trying to figure out what the mix is. It was sent by mistake. Sweeeet bird, hope it's a pullet.
How about a pic of the whole bird, Hennypen...

Boy oh boy...I learned that EXACT lesson today myself. One of my Maran girls laid her first egg...and I am so disappointed. My 2 pullets are sisters, so I'm not expecting much better when the other one starts laying. I'm so bummed...now I've gotta pretty much start all over. Does...

Bev...is this type of hen worthy of keeping in a breeding pen? I have one like this, too, and wasn't sure whether to use her or put her in my Olive Egger pen.
Welcome CRJ! There's a lot of super nice experienced folks here that will give you all the help you need....but I'm not one of them. At least not yet. My flock is young, so I just sit back, read, and inhale all of their wonderful information. It's really a blast here. The best breed...
Good morning all! I've been here lurking again...not much to say. I'm just sitting and waiting on my girls to lay their first eggs. They're singing up a storm, and the rooster is breeding...so hopefully soon. I go out about 3 times a day to check their box. They all were hatched from nice...

I had a Delaware rooster that had a big wave in his comb when he was young. I was very concerned with it and had even considered culling him because of it. But by the time he reached maturity, the wave had straightened out. However, his comb was HUGE, and I think that's why it had...
