Ok I tried to get some more of my fella. He was constantly walking away from me the stinker.
I see a stray white feather which I know is bad.
I have shown a lot of front body views and close ups of his face before- I can repost them if they are needed.
I think the last time I posted his tail was wrong, he was not wide enough and his comb was wrong for SOP. That's ok for now. Since he is all I have left of the 10 I started out with last year- we have grown very attached with him. He's a good boy and minus the occasional bum rushing me (I...
He's not perfect, but he is all I have left after culling and hot Summer claimed some of them. Hope to have some more this Summer. :D
He's a good boy. I have him covering my EEs until I can get some BCM ladies for him. And hopefully another male. Since this is my backyard flock, breeding will...
Today I got some fun shots of my 6 month old cockerel.
How does my cockerel look? I lost all my Marans pullets this Summer (I only had 2 out of all the 10 Marans chicks I bought anyway lol- the rest all males). It was very very hot. He is all I have left now after re-homing and...
I am considering selling this guy off but am having a hard time letting go. It would make it easier if he was an awful example of a FBCM. I thought I would come here and share pics of him and you guys could tell me if you think I am letting go of something good or something 'meh'. Thanks! I do...
I tried googling split breast and all I came back with was chicken breast recipes. LOL Could you tell me what that means and why it is bad? Thank you so much!
I was reading in my Chicken Health book that molting is really hard on chickens, especially the older they get. I feel so bad for them. I will def wait. I am enjoying the process too. Gives me time to learn more.
Tail feather question...my 2 week old BCs some have tails and some do not. With my Orps it was suggested that the tail less one was a cockerel. That actually seems to be true in at least this isolated case because now at 4 weeks the Orps: 1 is still tail less but has a red comb and chest bumps...
Woohoo! I was hoping they were. :D
Anyone? I know I will have to wait until they feather out to see who is kept and who becomes supper butttt is there anything about them yet that screams- cull?
Ok here are my two 4 week old BCs. (I have 6 more but they are only 2 weeks old)
Pullet or Cockerel?
My other chick:
I'm not sure what is up with the plum color I am seeing in these pics- I don't see it in real life. But I hope this gives you a good shot of them otherwise? Copper...
I have Orps and Marans so far. My Orps are growing faster/bigger and feathering sooner than my Marans are so far. They are also extremely docile (which I adore). Their feathers are different from other chickens- they are more coarse and tighter than most other chicken breeds.
About what age do you generally figure out the cockerel/pullet gender dilemma with Marans? I was scouring the internet for pullet and cockerel pics and Lord have mercy but some of the hens have some decent sized combs. I have two 4 week old chicks and they act very very cocky. One tries to crow...
