I've had several tufted romans hatch now. They have the tufts on their heads from day-one. It makes us both giggle and we sing "One of these gooses is not like the other one, not like the other one, not like the other on..." to them. A good time is had.
I think the act of opening/closing the incubator door is probably what causes most people's problems. With that said, I'm do it too often myself. It's hard not too.
He's ready to be out of there. I would go as far as to chip the egg further then uncurl his head from under the wing. Don't pull him out, but make it very easy for him so "slide" himself out. Then, even if he's still slightly attached, the umbilical will start drying out and break off.
I guess I have a lot more experience 'assisting' now. It can't hurt to flake the shell away. The problems get started when you start peeling on the membrane. If there is any blood (bright red) stop immediately. Sometimes there is gunky pink dry blook which is OK. Basically you don't want...
Hatching can take up to 2.5 days. But, you seem to have a gut feeling that something is not quite right. Very small mistakes in humidity and temperature can cause perfectly strong embryos to not hatch and die before escaping.

I hadn't heard that before. One thing I find interesting is that at Holderreads, they use paris of Pilgrim to be the surrogate parents for all the geese they raise of all breeds.
I have a pair and I did everything I could to separate them to get Pilgrim offspring. But they pine so...
I got 4 goslings and 5 ducklings over the past weekend. It was a true easter with 7 chicks hatching as well. At least I think. I've lost count.
And another hatch this Sunday....
Our first clutch was very disappointing. We had fewer than 50% pip and hatch, which is bad since through candling we determined all to be fertile. I understand the first clutch of any season can be bad, so we are hoping for better results this weekend. We'll have a hatch everyone...
My first clutch of 6 goose and 10 ducks is set to hatch tomorrow. I'm heading out in a minute to dust the cobwebs off the brooder and get it ready to go. I'll have a clutch hatching every Sunday now for at least the next 4 weeks.
