Here is my only roo now as my gorgeous blue copper Marans passed a month ago. He was in the new coop which seems to be a bit colder and I think his comb frostbite gave him some blood infection. The whole thing turned gray in no time and he was gone in 2 days. I will have to adjust coop before...

I've been saying for the past 2 months one of our polish is a boy and today I confirmed it. He has spurs coming in. Sad he such a playful little fella but I only have 2 coops and a copper marans roo in each. If anyone is in the market... I may convince my other half that the polish should be...

Don't know yet. The blue roo is from the same breeder and that lot was all boys. This lot yielded 1 boy and 3 girls. Breeder they came from works for balance of SOP and egg color and says they lay a minimum of 6 on the scale. I'm trying to balance bird quality with egg color also so this is a...

Here are my latest FBCM that I hope to breed next year. 16weeks here. The cockerel is over colored but I have dark girls that should balance that out. Can't wait to see their eggs. My Blue roo is also over colored but we will see next year what he throws with the girls :)

Well if your interested in olive eggers my broody is sitting on some due to hatch on 15th. She's part of my first order of chicks and is 2 now. Last year I let her raise and she kept them for 6 weeks before weening. The rest of my birds are from the breeder with the exception of 4 I took from...

I never buy or take birds from there ore anywhere really. I have a closed flock and only use a breeder from California who also has a closed flock. I have given away roosters there though. One of the women who took my first rooster only adds from me or her own breeding now since I explained...

Fox take all the birds they can. No chicken breed is a match when you have a predator problem. Batten down the hatches on the coop and freerange when your home or the dogs are there to guard them (I have 2 herding dogs that keep watch). After that - almost any bird works here. I have marans and...

ISO - good home. 14 week bantam Cochin / Silkie cockerel. came with my July 11th order from Alchemist. Unfortunately 3 of the 4 are male and I will be picking one of the marans to keep. He is Very sweet and definitely the bottom (even the younger cockerels pick on him). My flock disclosure...

*Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Haven't done this math since we built our coop* Assuming you don't have bantams: 60/12=5 sq ft per bird. If I'm reading right your coop has a 6 ft ceiling? Mine is vaulted so it's different. I had read that 4 per bird was ideal so that is what I went with when...

How many chickens do you have? We built our coop to the size of flock we wanted. They keep each other warm and we don't worry about them until it dips below 0. Chickens create a lot of moisture which equates to frostbite. We read up a lot on this site before opting to not use a heat lamp. When...
