Black soldier fly larva. I checked my compost bin today and found a bunch of the little wigglers. Scooped up a few wirh a trowel and put them in the treat bowl. Chickies looked a little puzzled at first, but discovered pretty quickly that they are GOOD!
A big ol' dandelion I pulled out of my garden. They have trouble with "loose" greens; can't seem to figure out that stepping on them holds them down, enabling them to tear off chunks. So I stuffed it in the suet feeder; now there are just some limp shreds hanging from the feeder. :)
Today it was the last slice from a loaf of (homemade) bread. Chooks have had trouble figuring out how to eat it, so today I put it in a hanging suet feeder. Success!
First it was some cooked lentils mixed with coarse-ground wheat and corn. Then I drained some kefir, and they got about a tablespoon of kefir grains (I only have three pullets). In a bit, I'll gut a cantaloupe for them. Oh, and a few days ago I harvested some seed heads from the overgrown weed...
Since we are having some remarkably warm weather, my five-day-old chicks got some playtime in the backyard today. One found some kind of tiny grub, and after a bit of work, managed to eat it. I was so proud!
