Yeah, apples O'Plenty this time of year, I passed on literally about a pickup bed full of them the other day, just too many to do anything with and deal with...
Yesterday I filled up their kiddie pool with about 50lbs of plums and 100lbs of strawberries... Tonight when I went out there they had eaten about half of it and monster mashed the rest into puree it was just starting to bubble (ferment) so I should have a lot of very happy chickens today...
Like almost all the do not feed items, the risk is low as long as you give in moderation... A tomato plant here or there isn't going to cause any harm, feeding your chickens tomato plants as a sole diet for a week most certainly might or feeding it to them regularly might...
If you actually...
Well the chickens struck out today... I had two banana boxes full of apricots, but after peeling all the PLU stickers off pitting them all and rinsing them all (a couple hour job), I decided they would be put to better use making some apricot wine/brandy... Ran them through a juicer and ended...
Surprised, mine love bananas, second only to yogurt in them flinging it everywhere as they swarm it... Acts as a pretty decent air freshener in the coop for a few days as well...
Even with fresh broccoli I have to shred it before the birds actually 'like' to eat it, when it comes to chunks or whole they will eat it but it's clear it's not a hit...
Yep, I started going grocery store to grocery store in my area (best to stick to ma/pa or independent ones not national chains), talking to their managers about the possibly of taking away some of their 'day old' stuff that was pulled from the shelves and destined for the dumpster... And after...
I can't honestly say as I have not researched it well enough since my birds won't eat the peels anyway, so that creates the bigger problem of slimy, stinky rotting peels all over the coop and deep litter, not something I want to clean up an deal with either...
I do on occasion and they love them but I don't give them the peels and I hate spending the time peeling them so even though I can readily get bananas (pretty much every day) from my grocery store hook up I rarely take them...
And just an FYI, I know it doesn't take long to peel a single...
Sorry guys, I have a mixed flock of peafowl, chickens (standard and bantam) and guinea fowl including multiple adult roosters, encouraging chaos can lead to injury very quickly...
Wow, a two week gap in this thread...
Anyway, here is todays (actually it will be spread out over 5 days) treat...
50lbs of ground beef!
Certainly not 'lean'
And the kids gathered around as I cooked it telling me how good the chicken food smelled...
If shredded doesn't work you can boil them and mash them like mashed potatoes... A lot of hassle but if you have the time and don't mind... I have done this in my turkey fryer when I have a lot of carrots to give them as it's less work then shredding say 50lbs of carrots ;)
Most big chain grocery stores, and stores like Walmart, Target and what not all use secure compactors not dumpsters... They look like this, sometimes they hide them in loading docks...
