I am definitely part of the Co-Op. I think I'm even going to move my quail into four (low ceiling) hutches so I can have an excuse to keep more from each line. And I've bought tons of little zip ties in order to keep the bloodlines sorted.
This shall be the year of the quail.
*Cracks knuckles*
Right then. What sort of obsessive charting/organizing/something is needed? If there's one thing I can do, it's break down lists and set up goals (achieving those goals is where things get tricky for me .
This is what I had planned on doing:
My grow pens are too tall...
Well, gee. Can't pull the wool over your eyes. OK then, $898.98 per egg, but we'll reduce the BYC discount to 5%....
That seems like a far better deal than some outrageous $900 per egg and a 10% discount. Who would pay $900 for an egg?
RiverOtter, how to raise the Moby Quail is something...
As a forgotten update, I have my first batch of Parents-of-F1 Coturnix Japonizillas in the incubator. I have told them of the naysayers that exist and have demanded that they blossom into babies that will grow to be huge and happy. Any who do not do my bidding have been threatened with the...
Whoa now. Why am I now getting charged $900 per egg?
That might actually top the old, beat up dark blue car I once saw that was completely covered in those tiny silver star stickers that teachers give out for A papers. We're talking top to bottom coated in these stickers in little swirly...
That is awfully tempting. After all, who wouldn't want 16oz Buttons?
I accept your offer. But considering the sensitive nature of expensive eggs and the cold weather, I must ask that they are hand delivered in a climate controled case that has a combination lock only the two of us know (bonus...
A&Ms will be paltry shadows when placed beside my behemouths. My quail will gobble down other strains whole then after the feast be hitched up to my carriage so that I can be whisked away to work every morning.
Provided Moby Quail aren't too fat and lazy to be cart trained. I figure if I...
I've joined the Co-Op. In 12 weeks I'll know how large my birds have grown and will have culled out the smallest ones. I plan on raising roughly 100 at a time and keeping back the 20 that have the best growth at butcher age. The rest will be sold or consumed. Ideally, I want a new generation of...
I have always been concerned when I hear about Jumbos that lay at six weeks. I have been passing them up when I see it listed for eggs since I've never really thought that Jumbos would lay before 8-10 weeks of age. Larger birds, a bit longer to mature.
Will Jumbos actually start laying at six...
My latest batch of quail are not at 14oz yet.
I checked out that guy's website, and it'd be fun if he is legit. Under his White Quail he has this description:
"Now available, a recently developed Gourmet White Meat Coturnix Quail. They were genetically selected for fast growth, wide breast...
If I remember correctly, back when Jumbo Coturnix first started there were a lot of people griping about how horrible the fertility rate was on them. They were kinda fun to have, but if you _really_ wanted to breed quail, you bred the original 6oz birds that would pop out babies left and right...
If man can make a chicken that grows to be as large as a normal turkey, and a turkey that can grow as large as a goat, then I think we can squeaze a silly little four more ounces out of our 12oz birds.
My proposal is simple: I want a 16oz bird by 10-12 weeks of age that lays reasonably well...
I am naive, optimistic, and want quail that make Butlers look insignificant.
I am happy to push to achieve this goal. And if my birds only gain an ounce instead of three, so what? If someone else wants to work on it, let them. No one is going to believe that it can't be done. As a society...
