I'm curious about this too - I purchased from 4 different breeders pure Marans with very dark eggs .... but I lost my BCM roo ... I was gifted a very lovely pure Marans all white roo ... who came from a dark egg ... has leg feathers - his body type is really good ...
My customers just want to...
sorry to post here - but I did a search and didn't come up with anything - do you all know anyone who is experimenting with Marans colors? (not the egg color - feathers) I got a cockerel who has the most prolific leg feathering - and he is white - he was given to me - so I am getting...
so self-blue -meaning you can breed it true to lavender with parents carrying the SB gene in right combo?
and blue meaning you have to have a black parent ?
But as far as the visible color - I don't see a difference - given that roos have hackles and such that come out a different color...
what is the difference between blue copper and lavender copper - when I see pictures of "blue" and "lavender" birds - they all look a nice shade of dove/soft grey to me. Pretty - but no blue or lavender.
So when you said a lavender copper - my mind just pictured a blue copper .... and I am...
Good questions at the end - I always assume "serious breeders" would like nice back yard flocks to take their culls .. but I could be totally wrong ! By take - I mean buy and still add to the profit margins .... :)
I'm certainly not offended - I think every breed does better with all kinds of keepers - as long as those of us (I don't show or sell) who have them don't claim they are the most wonderful pure Marans around ! :)
If we say pet quality Marans .... that is honest. The earlier poster who...
Hum - good to know it may be an issue for hatching ... but she is not going to be one of my "mammas" so no problem for this hen's eggs.
Now that you mention it - when I do find an errant egg on the floor - some tend to look this pinky-brown color .... but that is not what is happening to this...
I have an interesting egg color question ....
I assume many of you have had barred rocks - and you know how some of their eggs can have an almost pinky-light brown color ? Matted and not shiny.
So I have a mixed flock - and have been getting such an egg - which also seems to be lightly...
DM Rippy and Sweatpea ...
Yep!
HOWEVER - you see this is always the issue with putting solid "facts" in writing ... if people don't digest the whole thing ... then the subtle points - which sometimes are the most important points - are lost ... and not accusing you guys at all ...
chicken pickn and baunlee ...
That is exactly what I meant. If you don't let the carcass "rest" it will be extra extra tough, taste a little off ... I'm not sure of all the benefits ...
But I process in the fall with cool air - and just keep them in a big roaster pot in a cool/cold garage...
Yeah - not in a tiny cage so they can't move ... but like a small dog run or very large dog cage (depending on how many roos you have) - so they can move and look and scratch and stretch- but not really run or fly and build up strong muscles - it works and they are very tasty.

I don't really track ages .... I lose focus on that so fast ....
So what I do is have the roos that I'm going to cull in a batchler pen ....They have room and are outside - but not free ranging and running about - that kind of keeps the muscle tone lighter - then I feed them...
My two roos ended up being very big bodied - very healthy and big boys ... I think that is why I am really into them for a dual purpose breed - those extra roos make for a big dinner.
