so self-blue -meaning you can breed it true to lavender with parents carrying the SB gene in right combo?

and blue meaning you have to have a black parent ?

But as far as the visible color - I don't see a difference - given that roos have hackles and such that come out a different color ??? So that to breed true - we have to know which type of "blue" ?

So for ME - not breeding - I know the distinction is only of genetics and not of visually expressed color ??? Like I would say " She has pretty hazel eyes" and not care about her parent's eye color ??? Which could be any mix that a genetic doctor may designate different "types" of hazel color ????

Or am I not seeing the distinction in visual color due to pictures and screen issues ?

No they are VERY different in color once you understand Lavender. It took a few hatches for me to see the lavender vs Reg Blue. Lavender almost looks SILVER in chicks.

Blue is a deeper color and will vary. Lavender is the same color ALL over no variation in the shade or feather colors. Lavender also effects red/gold genes too.

BTW the gene is actually called Lavender, Not sure where the name Self Blue came from. A blue does not have to come from a black parent. It is just a dilution of black to make a gray color.

Self blue is the same as splash. I think it came from the term "self-color", which means a single uniformed color throughout the plumage. So self blue is uniform blue. In chickens, they are more typically called splash and aren't really a uniform color, however the term self blue is correct for turkeys that are homozygous for blue, those are also called lavender but there is no lavender gene in turkeys like there is in chickens, to complicate matters more

. But like chickens, in turkeys, blue to blue gives 3 colors: black, blue (1 blue gene), and self blue (2 blue genes). Self blue turkeys are very uniformly pale blue-gray.

What is the deal on this chick's wing feathers? Actually I have two like this and the third looks normal. They are Black Copper Marans from eggs I hatched Feb 13, so 4-5 weeks old

Hello to you all I hatched a dozen copper morans exactly a month ago . These chicks are growing more rapidly than my leghorns of the same age is this normal for this breed to grow so quickly? Another question is some are feather footed and some are not all eggs where from the same source is this normal?

I have a chick that is feathering out exactly the same way. She doesn't have any tail feathers either. Her sister is totally normal. They are four weeks old and look identical to yours. I'm hoping the half naked one catches up to the other.
