Received my color chart card yesterday. I am happy to have it as a reference. I really thought my eggs scored darker.. I have to keep myself in check! Lol
There's a lady on a local fb page selling Marans chicks for $12 each, but couldn't provide pictures of parents or eggs and she literally couldn't provide enough for the swarms of people buying.
I kept insisting for pictures and she finally threw a picture up from Whitmore Farms website which I...
Here's my roo that developed a white tailfeather and some white in his neck.
Sadly he's got to go. I'll only have one roo left. Will have to find some chicks or eggs soon.
One of my hens has just a few on the back of her head/neck as well. I want to collect eggs this spring, so I'm interested...
My two hens are laying. I need to find a few more birds that aren't related to mine. And one of my roos has a white feather in his tail, so he's going to have to go.
Just wanted to share a couple pics :)

I'm fearing the same thing about my hens. I'm pretty sure they started laying, and if the eggs I'm getting are indeed theirs, I'm going to be pretty disapointed. I was really hoping to see those dark eggs they're known for. I will have to try to observe the hens over the weekend to see if these...
More on shafting.. I have this mix breed hen and I noticed her quills are more of what typical shafting is? Can someone confirm that this is shafting? Sorry to post another bird other than a BCM, just want clarification on this trait.
Thanks for the sound advice snowbird.
I have a winter to research, learn and figure out what I'll do in the spring.
I wouldn't mind finding a couple hens to out cross with, but for now I need to just get through winter. Maybe next spring I'll find something.
So crossing them to my roosters that have a little too much copper would be good? Weird, cause they all came from the same lady. I thought maybe the girls would get their copper in when they got older.. this boy would work ok with them though, right?
Overall I'm super excited. I didn't expect...
I will keep both for now. I have plenty of other hens, they're just not BCMs. I'm going to try to find some more marans hens this spring.
#1's close up/comb.
#2's..
They are young.. about 5 months old.
I'll try to see if I can find the name of the lady I bought the chicks from.
She's from Otter Lake, MI. Said she bought her starter birds from a lady who had some at a show. I found an add on CL and wanted the darker eggs for the color contrast in my egg basket.
