Nicol Perry was working on bantam Black Copper Marans at one point, and doing quite well with them. I'm not sure if she's still working on them or not, Don would probably know....

That's very true. This is why it is best to try to collect eggs from on hen, since they are typically very close to the same color, shape, and sheen. Congrats on your win!!

CONGRATS, Blarney! You never know how yours compare unless you get them out there & show them. I'm surprised there weren't more White entries; I know several folks breeding them, but could be the off season for them (they are in Texas). Regardless, glad to hear you're getting your eggs - and...

Awe...it's definitely nice to know you have some that don't need quite as much work. My Jersey Giants are those birds for me. When I'm feeling frustrated, I go hang with my Giants for a bit. It always pumps me back up and makes the others not see as daunting of a task to move forward. :)

That's really great stuff to hear. LOVE IT. I hang onto my cull pullets for my layer flock. It's been fun watching even my layer flock look a bit better (to SOP) each year. Paul has some AMAZING Ameraucanas, best of luck with them, as well!

The axe is Don's (an my own) most useful farm tool. The nice thing about chickens is they taste great with dumplings. :) Kudos to you!! It's hard to hear negative things about your flock, but once folks get over it, it's truly the thing that helps them decide whether they wish to work on an...

scflock - I completely understand where you're coming from. NO ONE has a perfect flock. I always say, the day I think I have everything improved that can be improved is the day I ought to throw in the towel. :) The other thing here is that you learn SO much by seeing flaws firsthand! I've...

Well hang onto the ones you think would be good entries - just pop them in the fridge, and they should last a good 2-3 weeks. Several things are taken into consideration, first and foremost the egg color, of course. Then, uniformity of color among the set of 3 eggs - all 3 eggs should look as...

Okay, you may have sent them to the Lima, OH show? There were 14 entries in that show, and I am told the entries were overall quite nice! Let me know if this was the show you sent your entry to and how you did. Hope you came out on top! It's "carnation," not "coronation." If you are seeing...

scflock - the carnation comb/influence will show at the back blade, not in the front. He may have the beginning of a wave, but so far it's not bad enough to be faulted (IMO). When I zoom on the pictures, I can see that the feather quality is quite poor, at least on that first Blue. I didn't...

I wholeheartedly agree, Don; and your example of someone who sold hatching eggs & then got out of Marans within a few years is also a sing. Look for folks who have been working with them for many years. I have had them consistently for 10+ years now. Is my flock perfect? Absolutely not! But...

So much of this going around. I tell ALL my contact to please, please do your homework. I offer egg shell samples if someone asks - any good breeder will do so. Ask lots of questions - what are they working on in their flock? Do they exhibit their birds and, if so, how have they placed...

The "white underhackle" as we call it is a big problem in the breed, and specifically in this variety (it's also prevalent in the Blue Copper). It should be culled - from what I have gathered, that's the only way to eliminate it (simply do not breed those that have it). The problem with this...

White in the juvenile primaries typically does get molted out prior to final juvenile molt. However, you've got a bigger issue than that...this bird is showing extreme mossiness. It really should not be bred, unless you're just wanting pretty eggs or pretty birds; I mention this because by...

That's very interesting; I am usually about 95% sure by 8 weeks, but this would be interesting to try for sure. I know that DNA testing is done on larger birds such as Emu, that look the same as adults, but they use the dried membrane from the inside of the egg, post-hatch, for that. I've not...

I agree with most of what's been said on these two males. Each has issues and nice things about them, I guess if they were mine, I'd try them both, IF the first male is not roachbacked. I'm thinking it may just be the camera angle on that. The first male's wing carriage is actually too high...
