When did the copper really set in? Mine is 7 weeks old and is still predominantly black. There's a few splotches here and there but nothing noticeable. Just wondering if she will end up a Black Marans or a BCM.

More pics. I have been seeing copper for awhile. I have thirteen 8 week olds and just got 15 more 1 week old. Some have a lot more copper than others. All have some copper except one. I thought BBS Marans were different than BCM. I have 2 one year old BCMs with no copper totally black and I have 3 Black Marans that are from BBS, I do not consider the copperless BCM as Black Marans just BCMs that are over melanized.

They are nice big hens and lay a pretty egg and that is where they are, in my laying flock.

Thanks. My girl is quickly becoming one of my favorites of the new birds. Just wish she showed a little more color. I just got a black Isbar, two black Giants, i have a black Showgirl and a black Turken and now 2 black Cayugas. Too many black chickens.

I love black chickens! That sounds like a beautiful flock! I started with BCM and Ameraucanas. I got discouraged with the BCM and got Cream Legbars. These 8 week old chicks are really nice .... so sweet and friendly. I like them a lot. I am going to work hard with these birds and try to have some nice BCMs. My Black Marans are beautiful too. One of the prettiest birds I have is a Splash Marans. I think Marans are my favorite too!

Good luck with your birds. Where are you in Georgia?

We are just south of Atlanta in Stockbridge. I went with bantams originally for the fun look aspect for my daughter. This time around we went with Welsummers, Marans, Cream Legbars, Isbars, Giants, and Cayugas. Trying to put some new colors in the basket.

I live right below Thomasville. You should have some very pretty eggs!

Nicol Perry was working on bantam Black Copper Marans at one point, and doing quite well with them. I'm not sure if she's still working on them or not, Don would probably know....
