something to add to your feed program that will help with respiratory problems is turmeric in with their feed and cinnamon... I stopped having losses beside predation with this little tip
One ... Cruella.... anybodies guess... Mutt.... the "barred rock"... cuckoo marans.... pretty sure... I would watch and see what lays what.... yellow legs...not marans.... Wellie cross perhaps??? who knows.... congrats on the cuckoo... I didn't see any black copper anywhere... sorry.
Hey thanks... I don't know about that up and running but I have some "toys" in the yard again... I have 3 male prospect that are local and some across town in a holding area to watch them grow. Maybe we can exchange some toys this spring.. .I can give up some of my birds that the mysteries are...
Zanna, What would you be hoping to gain by the breeding? If you are trying to double up genes that is one way to do it... It may also tell you what they hold by doubling them. I see no reason to breed forward using a full brother. I would like to know why you would want to.
As long as you...
This question is for Tim: Why do some females have white toenails where others are grey??? What does this tell us about our females?
Bev: do you know??? Does this speak of extended black?
Good morning ladies!!!
I love Tim's explaination and would love his input on some more of these little "breeding snaffoos"... Would save us a bunch of time and feed to have a little "splainin'" as opposed to the trial and cull method.

This is a really cool page... Look at the chicks and such... The look of the adult can give you clues as to the genes hiding.. This is why I start with the eyes etc... Maybe this will help some ppl with what to cull etc... I...
FYI even the most "honest seller" cannot guarantee the result in any cross..... and a good qualified layer one year will have lighter eggs the next... Just as the melanistics of the bird age on the outside... the color wains on the egg over time... Just saying.... Understand the dynamics of the...
There is no perfect egg or perfect bird... those two things do NOT belong in the marans thread... The most perfected egg color to date for me has come from the genetic messes and conformation defects. These birds laid about 4 to 5 eggs a week at peak lay... The prettier birds suffered some egg...
Might be the angle... but the center shafts on the bird... spine of the feather looks light... could be bad pic...I think Don refers to it as "shafting". I am not fond of the eye color, however she has a lovely hackle and nice legs/feet. They eye color is acceptable to to bay but these look a...
Not enough black in the chest... The females need to be nice and black.. they carry twice as much of black melaniser.. If they are not carrying a "hard" color meaning the bird is VERY black all over then they will not have enough to cross with a male that only carries half the amount of...
Lonnyandrinda:
Just one person's opinion here:
I would use a more correct female in both type and color... The eyes are not acceptable if you are trying to breed forward to standard... She is less than a substantial bird for substance and she carries not enough melaniser in the chest to make...
Hey heather....long time no hear/see etc.... I have a couple of boy finally that I can post pix of.... They are my "do over".... No white fluff and such...Off spring of our collaberative venture... Is this one of yours from that? I like my results...
