I get some awesome feedback on the AM thread. I really did get some nice birds, and the chicks I'm starting to get from my first year breeding are beautiful. When I get to feeling too full of myself over there, I always come back here to get humbled
That's another reason I hang around this thread more. I could sell any bird that laid dark eggs all day long, and no one in my area would know any better. I want to learn and breed to SOP for exactly the reason you stated, for that rare customer that wants to show one day. I want the pretty...
My first flock was a total disaster, but I didn't know that until I posted pictures on here thinking people would tell me how cute they were. That was a rude awakening, but it was also what made me want to start learning more about what I was doing, rather than hatch every egg that's laid from...
Thank you for your opinion, and I completely understand where you are coming from. If I didn't want to breed for SOP, I wouldn't continually ask Don for his opinion. I know he's going to give the harsh truth, and that's what I want to hear. I don't want to be one of the people churning out eggs...
Thanks Don, and Wynette, too. I've always been confused as to whether it was carnation or coronation, so now that's settled. It appears that the rear of his blade may possibly be set to produce a few more points, and I thought that's what coronation was. Nothing definite yet, maybe I'm gunshy...
Ok, let me try this: @snowbird
Look up 3 posts ;)
There are 2 other cockerels, much slower to mature. One is the mossy chick, but the other may be worth watching. Why does one mature so much faster than the others?
Ok, here they are at 7 weeks. The biggest cockerel is just starting to show a little color, but the front of his comb is starting to turn a little, and could possibly be the beginnings of carnation comb. Don, and anyone else, feel free to critique. The pullets so far are still mostly dark, but a...
So many people don't know the difference in standard bred birds and mixed birds, I didn't. I learned here that the first flock I bought was junk. I could have easily kept breeding them and selling those offspring as BCM, but I wanted to do better than that. They sold out the first day I...
Ok Don, here are some more pics. There is only one blue. I see what you are saying, but that really is the lighting in the pictures. All others are black
Blue is on the far left
Close up of Blue
Best cockerel on the left, mossy on the right. There is one more that I'm still 50/50 on. Could...
Don, one male is maturing faster than the others. I think there are two more but those are pullets in the picture. One male is mossy, it was as a chick, but the other two are solid black so far. I see a hint of copper feathers in a few, including the blue. I'm fairly certain she is the only...
That's what I have been doing for the last 18 months. I kept chickens for 5 years before learning about SOP. I got my first batch of breeder quality AMs last year, and have been so impressed with those birds. This year I ordered my first flock of BCM from a breeder, and am growing them out right...
As a day old, she was just a touch lighter than the others. After a few days I started to suspect she was blue. I'm pretty sure now, and am glad that if she is blue she's a very dark blue. That's what I'm shooting for with my AMs.
I'd love to see more pictures of your rooster. I only have 2 to...
Just moved the 4 week olds to the grow out pen. Definitely 2 boys and 11 girls. The one I suspect is blue has sprouted a couple of copper feathers, so if she is blue, she's blue copper :D
If she is, I will make a trio with her and one rooster, then have the rest in a BCM pen :thumbsup
