I see no reason why this mating would not work, Just do not breed the BC colored chicks back to your BC Male as the genes will be tainted. These work great in you Blue matings though. I only grew out 87 BC this year and believe they are the best I have ever had. Kept 12 males and 18 pullets. I...
From what you have to pick from, the Blue Copper would be your only choice from what I can see, the first Black Copper has to much Copper on his breast. Are all of these Marans out of the same breeding pen
Check the local shows and try and connect with someone that is from your local area. Most Oldtimers like to Talk so just start up a conversation with some that have fowl in the area where you are interested. I will always answer your question on BYC.
Question for you about what you are looking for in the future. Do you plan on eventually getting some APA SOP quality Marans. You first male is too Black with out enough copper, the third male has a very high tail set. Process of elimination would only leave #2. Try and get a mentor to help you...
I see two males with the Coronation Comb and they will breed this forward. So would not use them for breeders. If these are all hatch mates from the same breeder pen I would be inclined to just use them for eating eggs for your family
I never leave the Marans males together once they are acting like they want to be the Boss. Best not to have females with the males once they act like they are ready to start fighting. I separate the male and female very young. My young male when they are out side in growout pens will fight if...
It cost just as much to feed mixed bred Marans as it does to feed the pure ones.,, Talk to Oldman Tom and he can direct you to someone that has some good ones.
When we buy adult Marans or even chicks we have no way of knowing has been bred into them.. Most people are talking about BC Marans when they talk about culling for the Wheaten influence. There is no way to tell if these have Blue Wheaten mixed in though. Just hatch some and see what happens.
Tom, If you do order eggs make sure there are only BC Marans in the pen they come out of. Lot of egg sellers have Black, Blue and splash in the same pen. If you are breeding for BC Marans you will not want this. I can PM you if you need to know more.
To get your breeding line it is ok to do once if they have no major problems. If they do have any major DQs then it would be a no go. If you do this single mating then you could breed the Dad to Daughter and the son to mother. After the first mating you would go into Linebreeding. Make sure you...
Single mate the Black female with the Cockerel and mark all the chicks. There is a Marking chart in my front page with all the possible markings. Feel free to make a copy for future reference.
Tom, I really like the black pullet with no copper, she is built like a tank. The pullet with the most copper appears to have a wry tail. I expect these are hatch mates right ?
