Black Copper Marans discussion thread

These 4 are 11 1/2 weeks old. I went to get some Easter Egger eggs to hatch and saw a beautiful Blue Marans Hen and fell in love...so instead of getting a dozen EE eggs, I got 6 Marans Eggs, 4 EE & 2 OE's. 4 of the 6 Marans eggs hatched. I ended up with 1 blue two black and a splash. I have way too many cockerels so, I'm only keeping one of these guys (I think). The splash is a pullet so she stays. I know the eye color is wrong on them...but short of that I don't know what else. I'm completely new to Marans so I welcome your opinions!

Here is my blue (that looks like a white feather but it isn't...it is just the lighting):

The second black boy...he wouldn't stand still so I didn't get a good picture of his head:

From what you have to pick from, the Blue Copper would be your only choice from what I can see, the first Black Copper has to much Copper on his breast. Are all of these Marans out of the same breeding pen

Thanks Snowbird, I'm partial to the blue boy. I'm not sure about them being from the same breeding pen. I didn't ask, as at that time I was only thinking about brown eggs. But now that I've gotten to spend time with these babies I really like their personality and of course they are beautiful. I do know that they had both a black and blue rooster. I didn't see a splash rooster. My sister in law has some BCM hens that I would breed the blue with. Here is a picture of one of her hens. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Does copper on the breast usually dissipate as they get older, or after molt, or does it get worse?

I was wondering that too as these guys haven't molted yet as they are just 11.5 weeks old.

Mine is 16.5 weeks and hasn't molted either.

I love the splash, so I may try to find a blue or splash boy for my blue girl.

I do not plan to keep this cockerel, but would like opinions as to whether I should try to sell him (high or low $), would he be of use to anyone as a possible breeder, or whether I should just process him. Just over 16 weeks old, hatched May 6th, pics taken within the past few days.

All these pics are the same boy. (and a couple of my blue girl, I'll be keeping her as a pet/layer) (the little copper looking cockerel behind them is a serama that hatched with them, he's like their kid lol)

The Copper on the breast usually gets worse as the get older, will comment more later.

The wry tail male would have no value as a Marans breeder.
