I know the feeling! I always end up candling more than I probably should. It happens. Just stay strong. Waiting is painful but unavoidable.
Figured I would pop in and say hello. I am still waiting for my banty gals to go broody, but in the mean time I have 22 eggs in the incubator. :D They are due to hatch on the 2nd. :D
Look for porous eggs. They can hatch but have a lower success rate. Lemme find the link...
Found it! https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/261876/chicks-are-here-egg-candling-pics-progression-though-incubation
What I heard is it has more to do with the hen doing the hatching. Dunno why but some hens tend to hatch more boys while others tend to hatch more pullets no matter where or who the eggs came from. Someone mentioned it a while back, quoting from the old timers thread.
Sounds like a real Broodzilla! My Summer only got her tail in a twist if the chicks got distressed and started peeping. Good luck with Day 2. Maybe she will relax a bit after a few days.
My recommendation, if there are infertile eggs under her you need to remove and she is a grouchy broody, do it at night to avoid loosing fingers! If she is mellowed about it, take the old eggs out during the day then just set the fertile eggs in front of her one by one. She should just tuck...
1) I have heard of silkies hatching turkey eggs, so duck eggs should be no problem.
2) I'm not sure but I think it was around 4 more days I think.
3) They should. They may just think the other is strange for trying to play in the water/not wanting to be in the water.
4) I don't know, but I...
In that case just make sure she doesn't have more than 8 eggs and put up something to stop the others from laying in her nest. Six eggs would probably be optimal but most hens can cover up to 8 comfortably. Your worst potential problem is her getting too many eggs to cover. Fewer eggs will...
Sooner is obviously better when it comes to fertile eggs, but wild hens take up to ten days developing a clutch so that's about how long you have before they start to really deteriorate.
The hen will leave her chicks when she is ready but if she is a 'super momma' and you want to start getting eggs again sooner you may want to separate the chicks from her eventually. Give them at least 6 weeks though.
I gave my 1st time broody 8 eggs but that was in the middle of a summer heat wave. I would say 4-6 would be a good start for a 1st timer with cool/cold weather. Good luck! :)
Best way to find out would be to give her some eggs. Set an egg down in front of her; does she roll it under her or ignore it? If she rolls it under her, she's broody. If she flat ignores it, she's just weird. If you suspect she is borderline then giving her a few fakes to sit on may push...
Gabriella- your little gal is hilarious! I have never seen a chicken do that before.
Leah's Mom- good luck on a late hatcher. It's always nice for a chick to have a buddy.
Anyone know if there is another thread like this one for incubator hatching? I got an incubator for Christmas...
