I was able to catch all six of the chicks today- the temperature climbing, so they're stepping out from under their mama to cool off! I tossed them (not literally!) into the little rabbit hutch just so I could get a nice group shot without them all scattering. It kind of worked! It's so hot...

We're having temperatures of anywhere from 22C up to 39C (today), though I have no idea on averages. Hopefully today was just exceptionally hot and it cools down a bit, though I'm feeling a little more positive about the hatch now!

It depends on your dog! Terrier and dogs like that are really good for rats and other small things and don't mess around, but some dogs can be a bit dopey and bite the rat wrong or just play with it and get some nasty bites on their face from the panicking rat. Jack Russels are usually amazing...

I'll probably just let the broody decide when she wants to leave them then. I'll candle them tonight again to see if theres any life, but even if theres not I'm not too devastated considering these eggs were probably already a week+ old when I put them under her.

Do you guys often have late hatching eggs under broody hens? I've got 2 eggs left under my hen that haven't pipped yet, 2 days after hatch day, although the other two chicks of our three only hatched yesterday. Neither of the eggs have pipped either. Does this mean they've probably not made it...

3 chicks out so far! I think we might have another two to go, but I've fussed with mum so much tonight that I'll leave her be. I'll take some pictures of them tommorow morning, they're just adorable :D

Just 5 or 6 more days until my second batch of eggs hatch....if I have another broody at any point in the future, I might slip a couple eggs under her and 'forget' to bring them down!

Me too! I'm trying for an incubator for christmas, and I'm already deciding what eggs I'm going to be putting in there xD I might just try and keep an egg in there at all times, so I can always have at least one chick running around at all times!
