Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I must have put more eggs under my broody than I thought! 7 chicks have hatched with 3 duds, I'm surprised she managed to fit them all under her! I wish I could let them out of their pen and get at some of the grass...but sadly we have lots of ravens around and the odd hawk, so they're going to...

I think she has about seven eggs under her? She's a tiny thing though so she usually only has 4 or 5 eggs under her. And I hope all your hens settle down! They can be such a hassle when they keep trying to make a nest where you don't want them too

Our designated broody has finally decided to hatch some more eggs now that the worst of winter is over...I think I've overloaded her with eggs though! Two were peeking out from under a wing when I checked this morning xD They still felt perfectly warm, I suppose I'll just have to keep an eye on...

Thank you! It looks like those are it for now, I candled the remaining three eggs and one is a dud, the other looks like it died a week in and the last one I'm thinking might have been slipped in by a hen at some point in the incubation-regardless, it's in the incubator so I'll check on it when...

I was able to catch all six of the chicks today- the temperature climbing, so they're stepping out from under their mama to cool off! I tossed them (not literally!) into the little rabbit hutch just so I could get a nice group shot without them all scattering. It kind of worked! It's so hot...

We have chicks! 5 have hatched today, another egg is pipping and there are two more eggs aside from that that'll hopefully do something :D I was only able to get a picture of three, but they are still so cute! The 5th chick is still drying out so it's really tired, fingers crossed nothings wrong...

My eggs are developing! Candled them last night, and they're growing at a steady pace :)

The temperature has dropped thankfully, so hopefully it'll be a bit easier on the mother! I can't wait to candle them at 7 days and see which are doing anything, I've tried candling at 2 and 3 days but obviously seen just about nothing xD And so sorry to hear about that stoat John, hopefully the...

We're having temperatures of anywhere from 22C up to 39C (today), though I have no idea on averages. Hopefully today was just exceptionally hot and it cools down a bit, though I'm feeling a little more positive about the hatch now!

Hey guys, will really hot weather affect the hatching rates! The broody has rolled some eggs out from under her for a little bit (she's put them back under now), is that just to let them cool down a little? Maybe I should have been a bit more patient to hatch these eggs D:

It depends on your dog! Terrier and dogs like that are really good for rats and other small things and don't mess around, but some dogs can be a bit dopey and bite the rat wrong or just play with it and get some nasty bites on their face from the panicking rat. Jack Russels are usually amazing...

My silky cross has gone broody again! I've put a few eggs under her, though I was a little picky this time and tried to get an egg from each of my hens-hopefully they'll all hatch! Her last set of babies aren't even fully grown yet, but I don't think she's likes them much when they're older. She...

I'll probably just let the broody decide when she wants to leave them then. I'll candle them tonight again to see if theres any life, but even if theres not I'm not too devastated considering these eggs were probably already a week+ old when I put them under her.

Do you guys often have late hatching eggs under broody hens? I've got 2 eggs left under my hen that haven't pipped yet, 2 days after hatch day, although the other two chicks of our three only hatched yesterday. Neither of the eggs have pipped either. Does this mean they've probably not made it...

3 chicks out so far! I think we might have another two to go, but I've fussed with mum so much tonight that I'll leave her be. I'll take some pictures of them tommorow morning, they're just adorable :D

Just 5 or 6 more days until my second batch of eggs hatch....if I have another broody at any point in the future, I might slip a couple eggs under her and 'forget' to bring them down!

Me too! I'm trying for an incubator for christmas, and I'm already deciding what eggs I'm going to be putting in there xD I might just try and keep an egg in there at all times, so I can always have at least one chick running around at all times!
