Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Morning, peeps! I'm still having issues getting e-mail notification of posts in my subscribed threads, so I honestly thought there wasn't much activity here. Boy, was I wrong! Some great stuff going on!! I candled the eggs under my Marans broody, and only 3 developed (all 3 naked necks). I...

It seems like we chicken folks are constantly waiting. Waiting for eggs to hatch. Waiting for juveniles to grow up and get their adult feathers. Waiting for pullets' first eggs. Waiting for said eggs to become fertile. Wait, wait, wait! Hang in there!

Thanks for the feedback on putting two broodies with chicks together after hatching. I think I'll try it and see if they get along, and I do have a way I can separate the stall in half in case there are issues. I was just hoping to have just ONE large feeder and waterer to contend with rather...

Blarney - I hope the co-broody situation works out - do you have a cover for that pen? I'm sure you must, but if not, you'll want to put something over it so airborne preds can't get to the babies & hens. Cute pix! bobbies - man, I wish I had a couple really good broodies here like you do...

Okay, I am ecstatic! My broody splash Giant hen hatched a chick! Just one, she only had one egg left. It was due on Saturday, she hatched it Sunday late or early today. It's momma is a red naked neck, and father is a splash Giant. Baby is cutsey-cute! Momma very upset w/me so I didn't...

If I didn't REALLY need these chicks, I'd just have given them all to the broody, but this may be my last opportunity to hatch off these chickens, so it's super important that I get as many chicks as possible. And, with my broodies thus far this year being less than stellar models of broody...

Hmmm....I'm no expert, but if she seems to want to lay in someone else's clutch, then I would think that means she's not broody herself. I have read on here where folks can "entice" a hen who has been broody before to go broody again when the timing is better, but it seems like if they're good...

Mites - the wild bird population is crawling with them, so if your flock ever comes into contact with wild birds (and most of ours do!), you'll get them on occasion. It's not a matter of not keeping a clean coop. I use Eprinex twice yearly, and (knock wood) I haven't had a problem the last few...

I put an "x" on one side and just a "/" on the other...no pecking issues, but it worked great for me when I had a first timer this year. I was able to know that she was, in fact, turning them, and I could easily see if another hen decided to add to her clutch. BEST of luck, jett! CarolJ - I...

From what I've read on this thread, it seems highly unlikely that she'll accept them, but you could always try, and have a back-up brooder ready just in case. Sounds like they really need to be day olds to be accepted. They would be 3 days old by the time you get them, plus, it would be 3 days...

Good morning, fellow broody lovers! Well, today is day 16 for my Giant hen. She had 6 eggs left, I candled them last night, and only 2 developed, and one is "iffy." Sigh.............. I had a Marans hen go broody (first timer, but they are usually rock solid on a nest), so I popper her...
