Thank You for the advice on my broody. I guess I will let her in with them if she wants to be in there. If she gets too aggressive she will have to banned from the chick pen! Her pecking them because they are not listening makes complete sense. She seemed to call them like the rooster does to...
My broody went to the nest box tonight instead of the roost , after being out all day, after I took her eggs and cleaned out the nest......hopeful she will forget about it and get on with normal life and put some weight on for next time!
I have some chicks that are 5 or 6 weeks old..she was...
Thank You bobbieschicks and fisherlady. I am just going take them from her and try to get her back to normal. I do not feel she is healthy enough to sit for another 21 days. She has lost alot of weight. I got 6 chicks from TSC a week before she went broody so I do not really want to raise...
My broody went out for an outing so I grabbed all of her eggs and candled them all. Here is a pic of one of the eggs 4 of them look like this, one has a smaller air sack. Sorry it is hard to see....about half of the egg is dark and the other half is clear like an air sack? 2 of the eggs were...
Ok I candled 2 of the eggs. One is dark all on one side the other half is the air sack I guess. The second egg did have a bit of a smell to it......It reminded me of the smell my hen had that got egg bound and got really sick...i ended up culling her. It did not have a large airsack, most of...
Thank You I will try. They are brown Wyandotte eggs and my girls have pretty thick, tough shells. I have not had any luck attempting to candle.....I have never seen veins or anything, but I do not know what I am looking at, or maybe too late or too early for the veins. I looked at the candling...
I candled my eggs today........ I really tried not to, but I couldn't help myself. I think they are all viable and living. I couldnt see anything only darkness inside the egg. They are brown eggs and seem to be very difficult to see anything thru...or it is my flashlight? It is a big LED...
No doubt! That is terrible luck! Not that I am any expert....But I think I would wait for the welsummer to go broody again and seperate her and give her the eggs you want hatched. I had to seperate mine as my wyandottes were going in and pecking her on her comb until she left the nest. My...
That is HORRIBLE! So you have had nothing but bad experiences. What did you do? Did you give your hen a couple of babies in the middle of the night and let her raise them?
Ya I kinda figured that was how it was going to go. I am going to try and handle them a little if mama will tolerate it without getting really upset. I free range as well so I can see your point about needing to be a bit more untrusting.
My son really loves handling the chickens though, so the...
Did you handle your chicks that were brooded by a broody? I have only brooded them myself in a box in the garage and of course was going out there all the time holding them and interacting. I am assuming chicks hatched here and raised by my hen will not be socialized very well. Or do they take...
Thank You for the info. I thought she would be very distraught at no chicks appearing. If mine does not hatch any chicks I think I will probably dispose of the eggs and attempt to get her to just go back to normal. My broody has lost so much weight. That is one of the big reasons I want the eggs...
I feel the same about mine. If just 1 would hatch at least she would have something for all her effort. I had nothing today. I tried not to think about it today and did much better. It only entered my mind here and there. I am going to attempt to continue ignoring it until Friday comes and...
I know how you feel I rehomed 2 horses when we moved. One of them we had for 10 years or more. It is really difficult to get over it. Knowing that the animal is ok and happy sure does help. I still think about them often and hope they are doing well.
Praying for your heart to heal and...
