The only thing I can think is that she started pecking away at the one and then just got carried away... as cold as it is here the littles would have started yelling in the cold, the sounds maybe triggered the frenzy. She is an experienced broody her last clutch was 10 chicks!
I haven't stewed...
STOOPID hen killed them all. I may cook her yet! One had it's intestines outside it's body so pecking it to death made some sense... But the other 3?! Don't get it.
I am so upset. (
Thanks for the answers... that's just about my luck too; 0 for 3, yep that is just about my speed.
A question for you ladies and gentlemen... I really don't know what to do...
I put 3 eggs under my broody hen late afternoon on the 10th. Those eggs have yet to hatch. I did the float test...
Not to derail this topic, but why isn't it a good idea to let red sex link hens hatch out chicks?? If you would prefer BarnGoddess you can pm me. I'm new to this and really curious... Thanks!

I am certainly not the most experienced on this thread but certainly NO ONE would have...
I can beat that! I have banty hen nesting... her son hatched in early June... son broke his leg fighting with another roo (got tangled up in the fencing somehow. snapped it clean) 2 days ago. He has slept every night since then crawled in the nest attempting to sleep under his mama. well...
Just got back from the Oregon swap, and the last one is here! Two yellows and a dark colored one!
You know I went hoping to pick up some Aracauna's and missed (by just a few minutes ) one of the people I was going to meet. I did get the cubalaya cockeral. And then a half dozen Welsummer...
They are alive and well!
I am thrilled with the blonde one... (s)he has little black spots and I was really worried about this one. #3 has 2 external pips so shouldn't be long now. Can't believe how fast they go from pip to hatch! I really expected it to take days. Cranky there allows...
Here (s)he is:
The other is yellow, just not quite there yet... the last has yet to pip but is definitely pipped the air cell. You can sure hear outraged peeps from in there!

Congrats!! I did discover that my broody hatched eggs seem to go from pip to zip a lot faster than...
I have one black chick, just hatched! Wow! yumyum won't let me take photos, but did draw blood when I moved her and baby and eggs to a cardboard box onto the floor of the coop. I was shocked! Didn't think it would go from pip to hatched so fast! (Course, I don't know when they pipped so...
I love the pictures of the mama's and babies! Too cute...
Here is crankypants aka yumyum:
And the pips:
funny girl that she is, when she sees me she hops up and leaves me to watch her eggs. Then I have to catch her and put her back on her eggs.
If I can stand it, I'll wait until tonight...
As for next year? Don't know yet, I'm going to the Oregon swap on Sat so it'll depend on what I get there, I suppose. I would like to get some dark egg layers while I am there... Who hatches what will depend largely on what I have and who goes broody...
I'm on day 17 here with another on...
