    Dyeing the chicks

I've been meaning to get on here and update. It was a flop . I had a horrible hatch, out of 6 eggs (all wiggling in lockdown) only 3 hatched and one died before it came out the incubator and one of the ones that made it out is doing really bad and is pretty lethargic and notdowny looking. It...

    Dyeing the chicks

Quote: i think we should name the chick Shrek or Fiona.. I like that! It will defiantly be a top name choice if the little green chick hatches. Lockdown starts Friday, getting really close!!!

    Dyeing the chicks

Yeah I kind of chickened out at the last minute. I was too scared of hurting one. I did one egg with green dye and now the egg is solid black inside so I can't find any vains or anything with the flashlight (even right after the dye went in). So now I am just going to see if it hatches and if...

    Dyeing the chicks

Well today is dye day (hopefully not die day). I have my dyes pulled up in their syringes and in the incubator warming up to temp. I plan on injecting around 3 today. All I could get a hold of was a 22g needle, bigger than I wanted but will have to do. I am using the food dye I have which is...

    Dyeing the chicks

I am pretty sure there is no law preventing me from dyeing my chicks here in Louisiana, last year my neighbor bought some so it must be legal to even sell them here. I was looking on the internet this morning and there are some pretty weird laws that come up. I am already really excited about...

    Dyeing the chicks

Quote: You put the needle in the shell right under the membrane, so the dye is going to be touching the chick. I still haven't been able to locate a vegetable based food dye so it looks like I will have to use the normal food coloring and hope it works fine.

I was kind of nervous about the negative feedback too. What day are your eggs on, chickflick247?

    Dyeing the chicks

Sundownwaterfowl- do you have a pic of the dried chicks? I would love to see it. Thanks for the tip about the nail file. What size needle did you use and what kind of dye. Stormymoon- thanks for the links the second one was the exact one I had been looking at. It seems not to hard...

    Dyeing the chicks

Quote: You put alcohol or iodine on the egg where you are going to puncture and only put a really tiny needle in just under the membrane. Then you close the hole with wax or a bit of bandaid sticky.

    Dyeing the chicks

I have normal food coloring but it has artificial stuff in it (sucros, red 5, and yellow 6, etc.) from what I read it said to use a vegetable based food dye.

    Dyeing the chicks

Please nobody yell at me for posting this. I want to dye some of my chicks due to hatch next Friday. I have read that you can inject some vegetable based dye into the egg at 11-14 days incubation and the chicks will be colored. It doesn't harm the chicks in any way. I just want to do this...
