I think I will do that, and bring them into our attached garage when it's freezing. I have a large wire dog crate I can use for the few days/nights we reach freezing temps.
How do you train them? That's great!
Here are my Silkie girls. They hatched all 100%....7 eggs!! They seem to be keeping the babies warm so far with all the cold and rain we've been having here in Oregon the last few days!
That makes me feel better. I'm new to chickens, specifically Silkies, and I was getting worried with the cooler temperatures outside at night. My coop isn't especially safe for a heat lamp.
Does everybody provide additional heat for your chickens during the winter. Near the Portland area we do not experience freezing temps too often. I've read it's best not to provide heat so your chicken acclimate to the weather and to prevent shocking their system. Any thoughts?

What does everybody think of forming a Meetup group where we can learn from each other, make new friends, share coop ideas, field trips, natural broody hen hatching, incubator hatching, keeping our flocks healthy and thriving, a place to buy or swap hatching eggs, etc? I'm in Yamhill Co. Where...
T-traveler, I'm compiling some ideas of coops I would like us to build. Do you mind giving me a rough estimate about how much a coop like your would cost to build?
How exciting. We are planning to look for some property early next year....then I can expand!! For now I have just my 3 Silkie hens, and just drool at all the other beautiful chikens I hope to someday have. My husband says I can have more chickens once we have the room.....hahaha....he has NO...

Hi Javaferret! :)
Yes, did look through Meetup and couldn't find a group for backyard chickens or anything related to chickens. My husband and I are part of Meetup but for movie groups, etc. I just thought it might be fun to get a Meetup together related to chickens and see how it goes. I...
I live in McMinnville and would love to meet and talk to other local BYC lovers who I can learn from. ...or learn from each other. Anybody ever thought of putting together a meetup or a similar group where we can meet and get to know others who love chickens?
How do you all winterize your coops? I live in McMinnville and there are only a few times we get some freezing temperatures. I have a small coop, had to re-home too cockerals so I'm down to 3 Silkies who just started laying eggs this month
