Any chicken you get from feed stores come from hatcheries and aren't quality birds. Most are usually breed with some thing else to up the egg laying abilities. My hatchery buffs were bred with reds and you could defiantly tell when you put them side by side with a red. So you never really know...
You are probably right a fox would have most defiantly killed and ate her. I'd kill that dog. Attacking animals on your land, ya that would be a dead dog. Don't get me wrong I love dogs but have no use for ones that don't know there place and kill for fun.
A story for all.
Last week some neighborhood kids found a small gosling. When I found this out I took it from them and went to the spot where they found it. When I could not locate the chicks mother I decided to take the chick to the lake, which is only about 50 yds from my house. I figured...
Last weekend I got 1 Cock, 1 Hen and 3 pullets S.O.P Buff Orps. The pullets are the daughters of the hen and cock. They were 4H show birds. They never made grand champion but did fairly well. I got them from a friend of friend that had his job transferred and couldn't take the birds with them...

That is one grouchy girl. She looks like she is going to rip your fingers off. And have you thought about caging Bella with her eggs so she has nothing to do but sit.
That is her way of saying get your hands off my eggs. I get that a lot. I have 4 girls that are broody and they scream at me, even when they don't have eggs. Then I get the death stare. 1 of my girls is sitting on eggs. Babies any time now. Hopefully Today.

Hopefully in about 12 days I will have babies.
The other hens just started sitting about 2 days ago.
1 other is starting to show signs of...
She won't be back. This is the first time I ever seen this from her. I hammer it in to my kids to have respect for all creatures even ones intended for slaughter. Well especially ones going to slaughter, they are after all giving their lives for us to live. That is the most noble death there is...
Can anyone tell me if it is easy for a wing to be broken. I caught a neighbor kid kick 1 of hens yesterday and now her wing is hanging and swollen. She was eating and drinking this morning then curled up in a corner. And it figures she is my favorite hen. Her name is Queen and she is just that...
I put 10 males in the freezer last fall. They are not bad. Mine are free range and they like to run from one side of the yard to the other like a chicken marathon. It made them a little tough but has a good flavor.
