*Buff Orpington Thread!*

How can you tell the difference between the english and american orps? My girls, felt like forever until they started laying. I got them at rural king. Any way to tell?

Any chicken you get from feed stores come from hatcheries and aren't quality birds. Most are usually breed with some thing else to up the egg laying abilities. My hatchery buffs were bred with reds and you could defiantly tell when you put them side by side with a red. So you never really know what you are getting. My opinion spend the money and buy from breeders not hatcheries..

In the future, we intend to buy only from thoroughly researched breeders. The reason I say "thoroughly researched" is that I bought some Bantam Chocolate Orpingtons from a breeder who have had nothing but health problems since the day I brought them home. Sad to say one of my sweet babies is failing right now and I am probably going to have her euthanized tomorrow to end her suffering. On the other hand, the Buffs that we bought through My Pet Chicken are beautiful, healthy, sweet and are excellent layers. Maybe we were just lucky to get such great hatchery chicks.

I wouldn't say they aren't quality birds! I don't know about your tractor supply etc., but mine buys from many reputable hatcheries. I checked that out before I purchased. My little ladies are beautiful with big bustles and the sweetest temperaments. Perhaps not everyone can afford specialty birds. Doesn't mean they aren't bred true or quality.

Eggness is enjoying her last few weeks indoors. She's really attached to Hunter as you can see. At this very moment she's trying to scoot closer to him on the couch :) Still no signs of maturing besides her voice. (I don't know how else to refer to her clucks haha)

I am so glad you posted about Eggness. I have been wondering about her. Is she genetically a very small Buff or is she a true bantam?
