Sadly, when this happens, the chick usually doesn't make it. But I hope yours does.

Agreed. It is generally a bad idea to use a photo of someone else's bird for an avatar, even on FaceBook without the owner's permission. It does mislead even if that is not your intent. Or perhaps a photo that is without doubt in the public domain. People get burned all the time for having...

Buffs that have been properly maintained as pure lines are derived from different lines than the other colors are. Strange but true. What also is true though, is that we probably have none that were so properly preserved. Fact is, that breeder birds are almost always more friendly and nice than...

And you have just revealed exactly why people have their own dogs kill their chickens more than other dogs. Because they love their own dogs more than the chickens they just killed. Be prepared for more kills. But at least protect the chickens better. This too is why most folks side with dogs...

There are people that do indeed shoot their own dogs if they kill chickens. Unfortunately I hear about people's own dogs killing their birds at least as much as I hear about someone else's dogs doing it.

People are too quick to defend dogs. They are predators, it's against the law in most cities and even the countryside to have them loose, yet officers and everyone else seem to side with the dog. Aw gee they are sorry but that doesn't get you your birds back. Ever.

About the dark spots on the comb: I wouldn't worry about it. He doesn't have many and it could be a mild form of pox. Mine get it, it clears up, and that's that. Or his buds pecked him. I see those black spots so much I just ignore them pretty much anymore. They clear up after a week or so...

I still have my original hatchery hens and one of those stands out like you say. Somehow she got some of the right stuff in her. Maybe you got lucky!

Absolutely! I still have a few of my old hatchery girls, and up next to the good ones, they are TINY. Even my "Big Girl," the biggest hatchery hen, is smaller than the breeder birds.

Yes, that is sort of what they will do. But how lucky they are compared to single babies! I've seen both single young ones and those with hatch mates get along with the rest of the flock. At least your two have each other for buddies. Glad though that they seem to be getting along good...

8 week olds will be picked on. So long as the young ones have plenty of places to run and hide from the older ones, then yes, you can let them all out together. They will be bullied but as I said, if you have LOTS of space and places they can get under things to hide, they should be fine. One...

Basically when they get good and ready lol. Some start as early as 22 weeks but really it's just a waiting game.

Glad to know! And you taught that vet something too! In his or her defense, vets really aren't taught that much about chickens, and even less about so-called "home remedy" type things like this.. that WORK!

Something you need to keep in mind is that these are chickens, not puppies or kittens. Many never get to the point of tameness you seem to want already, regardless of breed. You'll have the most luck if you get one as a baby chick and raise it all the way to adulthood of having a super tame one...

On the bottom of the feet, do you mean bumblefoot? I hate bumblefoot! Had a pretty little hen that was really not a healthy specimen overall anyway get it and no matter what I did, I couldn't defeat it. Finally had to just put her down to get her out of her misery. But that doesn't happen often...

Oh that's terrible. Did the vet get all the maggots off/out? Yes she could have strained I suppose but that's usually a prolapsed uterus not intestines. How sad. I hope she makes it.
