The sick looking bird on here with the head swelling, I would bet a dozen eggs it was chiggers. That's why the ivermectin treatment worked.

Thanks, it is expensive. Last year I bought one combo machine and a ten needle embroidery machine. I did the Christmas program shirts for 5 classrooms at my son's school and had both machines humming 16 hours a day.
Clay poultices might work but they are usually for reduction in swelling and not drawing from what I remember about my days with jumping horses.

Did you inspect for mildew? Are there any holes in the soil to indicate insect activity that might have cut the roots?
