Its my understanding that the barring on females is often very faint and that they do have stippling patterns on feathers. Mine does. The barring if I recall is best seen in the grey area under the bottom and on the neck feathers similar to delawares. It is indistinct and often broken.
On the topic of undesirable male chicks. Finding a source to have them as feed for other predators (snakes, raptors, owls, pigs etc) would be an option id consider. Most of these places need to take the animals live to avoid health concerns.
Personally I raise them out for processing. They...
Yes this seems to be the best indicator yet that Ive seen for males vs females in all the breeds I have. Now its hard to compare breed vs breed but within the breed this is true. Another factor to consider is that hybrid vigor may throw off the normal feathering rates and produce a bit of...
For the full legbar chick on top it actually looks female. It has a smallish headspot (if you can call it that) which is contained within the V head stripe. It has distinct striping and eye liner it just happens to be a more gold colored chick (look back in the thread you can get female chicks...
If the 2 Levin seems to have the longer back otherwise there isnt much difference. If you are just breeding to keep CLB going till you can focus I would pick the better temperament
Don't discount disposition. And as others have said give him time. Combs are so hard to judge because so many things can effect them and they change a lot as they age too. Also breeding to a female with a good comb can mitigate it. Disposition is very important too, beautiful but angry birds are...
in general growing out males and females together tends to create these kinds of issues. The males hormones kick in much sooner usually than the girls and they seem to not understand the concept of robbing the cradle.
I try to separate male and females after about 8 weeks. Cuts down a bit also...
My boy is super mello around humans a bit frisky at times with the girls but in general a great boy.
My girl is the smallest girl in the pen but full of personality she shys from contact at times and at others will demand to be perched on head shoulders what ever even climbing up your leg back...
ill have to get some pictures but I have 3 of the cutest Legbar mixes that are about 4 weeks old and they are the friendliest chicks Ive ever had. They are brave and calm and simply adorable I wish I'm really hoping for all girls they are so fun and each one so different all the hens are...
I agree with separating cockerels as soon as possible I would also suggest feeding them a higher protein feed than the young pullets for longer. Its good to separate for a variety of reasons. One is that a good roo will let his girls eat their fill then take what he can get. I prefer for my boys...
Yeah his comb is way too big for his head and gets covered in food and other stuff so it looks terrible it doesnt flop all the time either when he drinks however it gets washed clean sometimes and the ladies always help pick it clean too. He has a really large crest for a boy I think and is the...
Here is the closup of the crest on my boy
And a full shot
And a couple of pics of my girl
This is where Im starting. Also have him covering a couple of blue egg laying EE's to help increase the blue egg laying at my place.
I just set 7 eggs from my pair took me about 10 days to get 7 and figured waiting on 8 might not do me much good. I calibrated my incubator too so Im hoping for a good hatch. I started collecting once I saw that my girls eggs were fertile. Im hoping. Ill start collecting again in about a week. I...
My daughter cracked open a CLB egg the other day and said it was fertile so my boy finally caught her. So I stuck one of her eggs under my broody. we shall see.
