±----------- To my knowledge Walt Boese is no longer breeding light Sussex. neither is Sandra Ross in Canada .I rehomed my flock to Carl Thompson in Blairsville Pennsylvania . they are Walt Boese crossed with Sandra Ross. All pure English strains. I talked to Carl just last week. he has kept...

wow, it looks like a Blue Splash something. I don't see any of the Columbian gene markings which would mark it as a Light Sussex. Very interesting, Karen

For me, yes. One could have a Light Sussex with wings as improper as those on the chick and still be a Light Sussex. But the black hackle is definitive for Light Sussex. Then again, if you are truly seeing barring. The barring gene doesn't exist in any Sussex variety. Best, Karen

Maybe she is a Light Sussex missing the Hackle Black gene? Grant says in his UK book, " 2st Century Poultry Breeding" that he believes that a Light Sussex without the proposed Hackle Black gene would not have a black hackle. You should send this pic of this chick to Grant Brereton and see what...

That is weird Aussie Annie. the rounded ends on the hackle feathers says she's a girl. Boys have pointed ends to their hackle feathers. I think the shape of the tail says girl too. The comb definitely looks like a boy. Also no sweeping drape of saddle feathers like the boys have. Maybe she is a...

Hi, The birds above have barring in their hackle feathers. I believe they are Delawares. Which is the same coloring as the Light Sussex but with the barring gene added. Plus they have yellow legs. Light Sussex have white legs. Sometimes Light Sussex are hatched with a yellow tint to their legs...

It will not move you away if it is done in a balanced fashion. The problem they were seeing back there in the breed was a change in body type just for egg production. The Leghorn is a superb egg layer. Granted it is much easier to make money with eggs than grow out meat birds for the small...

I think the more we encourage or allow these obviously upright tails (more than 45 degrees) , the less we will see the long back noted in "General Shape and Carriage" in that Standard. Remember the Sussex's production qualities are so closely linked to its body type that literally if it doesn't...

Yes, I am a fan of the tail which comes off the back a little less than 45 degrees. The higher the tail set, the shorter the back seems to become. But there should be some lift to the tail. 35 degrees works for me. The angle of the tail is measure from the root of the tail to the tip. The...

Very black feathers can have a "green sheen" to them. Albeit they are not in actuality "green " feathers. This is correct. What you don't want to see is a purple sheen. That is improper and due to injury, genetics or improper diet. Best, Karen

Hi, On sexing youngsters When their feathers come in, check the hackle feathers. If they are rounded at the end, they are female. If they are pointed at the ends, they are male. Best, Karen
