Here's the newest member of the family.
She had a really hard time hatching, but finally made it. I left her in the bator until 6am, then added her to the Welsummers in the brooder. She's been sleeping a lot, but so have they.
When they aren't sleeping, they have an attentive baby sitter...
Woo hoo!
I took out all the eggs I was sure were no-shows to clear the stench from the bator. It made a difference. Still doesn't smell good, but it smells better...
I debated whether to toss the remaining mille fluer egg. I decided it looked kinda full and held on to it. And it pipped! It's...
Thanks for all the help, Kim!!
I'll definitely read up on all this, in a little while
I am praying for a silkie or two to be peeping at me when I get home today. I saw movement in 2 eggs, and big veins in a third last night.
I'm wondering if the big veins aren't a good sign that these little...

Try this to help the spraddled leg

I did read that electical tape was good to use as a splint for the curled toes, but I'll keep digging.
Kim
Cool! Thanks!! I'll read up on it when the boss goes to lunch. I guess I gotta get some work...
They're on paper towels over aspen shavings right now, so traction isn't an issue. Gotta be a birth thing. I've seen pics of birds with their legs band-aided together. Will give that a try. Hate to lose een one of my precious wellies.
Praying they are all girls, and not all boys.
Our silkie...
#6 hatched out at 10pm with only minimal intervention (a little bigger air hole and lots of talking).
DH does know me too well. He'd already shut down the computer and threatened to unplug it if need be. So I was foced to go to bed!
Got up at 4am and added Six to her siblings. There's one I'm...
Callie has never hurt a baby, but she's never been unsupervised with them, either. She nuzzles into their fluff and has been known to tug on the fluff a tad. Chicks don't like that. It's funny to watch Callie because as she huffs baby-essence she has her mouth partway open as if she's savoring...
The chicks actually walked around Callie a little at first, but the pics were all blurred as I raced to get the camera on it all. She settled away from the light and they piled up under the light.
The other cat is Jezebel. She's about 8 years old, Callie is just 2 years old.
No pips on the...
Thanks! Love those hatching vibes
DH was chortling about how we're into our 3rd generation of chicks. I reminded him that we're in our 2nd hatching, 3rd experience with chicks.
I said it won't be a third generation thing until we're hatching the grandbabies of these chicks. He got a scared...
As of 4am I had 2 babies in there!!
As of 7am the third was 1/2 way unzipped and ready to join the party. A fourth was pipped.
Still no pics, though. The 2 were sleeping all cuddled up together and I didn't want to mess up temps & humidity with #3 so close to emerging.
The brooder is set up...
I'm so excited!
Dh got the brooder all set up. Now we just need a friend to hatch for our first little girl. I can see beak action now in one egg's hole. Going back downstairs to pipe in more water.
By the time these hatch I should have stronger legs! Up and down the stairs over and over and...

Isn't it hard giving up and tossing the yolkers? Luckily my youngest DD was helping me write down candling records and encouraged me to be ruthless. If it glowed through on day 15 she was ready to toss it!
I'll get some pics soon. Hate to open the bator but the glow will ruin any pics...
I'm catching up on BYC posts to avoid being where I can hear that irresistable 'chirp chirp chirp'!
It's not easy...
Out of 14 eggs I have 10 left that showed development when I candled.
I also have some silkies in there, but don't see pips on those yet.
I had millies, but most of them failed...
My Welsummers are hatching, right on schedule!!
I have a baby already out and at least one more that's pipped. It's hard to tell with those dark shells.
I'm sitting on me hands now
