I hatched dark black copper maran eggs this past October. What I did was candled from the opposite end. I also had a light that allowed me to do this well and safely from the top, however. By no means could I see clearly at any point like a white egg. By days 7-10, veins and air cell should be...
I'm not the most experienced, but to get you an answer, if your temp jumps up to....lets say 110...for the day, the eggs are probably no good. You could candle for movement. Keep in mind that the the temp in the egg doesn't immediately change. So, if the temp change isn't drastic for too long...
Start to finish...
I had the incubator set up in my living room because the temps were more even. When it was hatch time, I had a little bin nearby with a heat lamp, food, and water. They're still in that now. They'll go into a 64 gallon sterilite bin tomorrow. They're still walking like drunk...
So far 7 chicks and two zipping out. 9 more external pips. Not bad for my first time hatching BCMs. 24 went in the bator and 24 went into lockdown. All vents are open and another humidity spike up to 81%. Temp is around 99.5. Should I worry?
I'm using the hova bator 1602n. I had a fan in at first but I felt it made the temp a bit more off. It just didn't work for me. Yup, both vents open. I think the house temp didn't help much. I cracked a window in a bedroom away from where the bator is to get some crisper air in. That did the trick.
Black Copper Marans. There's a few lighter eggs that are BCMxSLW. First chick hatched a day early around noon today. Lots of external pips and chirping now. Ive had to keep a close eye on the humidity. Having 24 eggs in the bator and most hatching at the same time kicked it pretty high.
No, I just sniffed around the vents. When we incubated duck eggs we always knew....you don't forget that smell. lol!
Around 30%-45%. I didn't let it get below 30% and I tried not to let it peak over 45%.
I marked the air cells yesterday thinking if I had to intervene, I'd have an idea where it was. I candled a few now and then throughout incubation, but otherwise I didn't pay much attention to them. I just did the sniff test :-) I brought the humidity up to 60-65% for the maran eggs. This is my...
Yep, figured out where my thinking went wrong. I locked down the eggs a little bit ago. Hopefully, I can get that humidity up. I tried candling for air cells the best I could but those BCM eggs are tough. There's a few SLW/BCM eggs in there that are a bit lighter. Hoping for the best these next...
Oh man. So, eggs are placed in the bator at 7pm Saturday. Day 21 will be 7pm Sunday (3 weeks later, of course).....correct? So, I'd want to up the humidity and take the eggs out of the turner on day 18, which will be Thurs on the final week.
Got it. Makes sense.
Are you talking about the stuff that grips? I was thinking of using that for less of a mess, but I wasn't sure if it would mess with the humidity, chick feet, temp, etc? It's nice that is has the holes.
