egg is stuck inside skin and is hanging on the hens bottom

I so happy to read that Rosey is laying and her insides are staying in! I have been away for a while, so it was nice to find the good news when I checked back. It must be such a relief for you! The plan to gradually get her back to her regular chicken schedule, as mentioned, sounds like a...

egg is stuck inside skin and is hanging on the hens bottom

The pictures of Rosie look great so what you are doing is obviously working for her. I agree with ki4got that controlling her exposure to light like you are doing is really the most important factor in avoiding egg laying and obviously that was what your vet was focused on. I know reading the...

egg is stuck inside skin and is hanging on the hens bottom

Here is a link to the thread where I read it https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=426140&p=2 I think sherylreno brings up a good point, you probably could let Rosey roost in her coop overnight once you are confident that she has recuperated enough. You may want to watch her...

egg is stuck inside skin and is hanging on the hens bottom

Oh I didn't realize the stitches were taken out then, that's good. That list says, "Put the hen on a maintenance diet of wheat and water." Human foods without too may additives where the main ingredient is wheat would work. That's why pasta and noodles would be fine. You probably want to...

egg is stuck inside skin and is hanging on the hens bottom

the3ofus+oursixchicks : which do yall think would be the best to do? take rosey out in the morning and bring her in early or taake her out around mid day and let her stay out til bedtime. I would stick to 3 or 4 hours max of time outside avoiding midday sun around noon just to be safe. After...

egg is stuck inside skin and is hanging on the hens bottom

Her vent I guess is a bit narrower with the stitches, so maybe that's why it collects around her butt, and pooping may be a bit uncomfortable. But the poop you took a picture of looks like it is a normal size ,a decent dollop, so that is what is most important.

egg is stuck inside skin and is hanging on the hens bottom

That looks like a good healthy chicken poop! Despite the build up around her vent, it doesn't appear to be blocking her poop. Some clear liquid with the poop is not necessarily unusual. That looks like a nice sized set up for Rosey. I have learned through experience that the chicken poop can...

egg is stuck inside skin and is hanging on the hens bottom

Feeding her the chick starter sounds like a good option since that is what you have got that is nutrient rich and easy to digest. I see her purplish comb, which is worth reporting to your vet tomorrow. You have probably started making a list of all the questions you want to ask the vet...

Keep hanging in there. I'm glad that Rosey is pooping some. Does her poop look normal, does there actually seem to be a smaller quantity of poop than you would expect? Fortunately you have a vet you can call tomorrow morning and you can report all the symptoms to find out what the vet thinks...

egg is stuck inside skin and is hanging on the hens bottom

The olive oil sounds like a good idea. I'm not sure what the clear liquid is. You could apply a clean, warm damp cloth to her vent area periodically. You might want to monitor how her belly feels and note any changes in size or firmness. I bet before you had chickens you could never imagine...

egg is stuck inside skin and is hanging on the hens bottom

Internal laying occurs when an undeveloped egg (without shell) gets released and misses the oviduct. The egg material goes into the abdominal cavity and is partially reabsorbed. If it happens repeatedly the belly gets big. The condition is also called egg yolk peritonitis. Many hens get an...

the3ofus+oursixchicks : Quote: yes they just called and he said to keep doing her like that with the light until about the 2nd week of nov. and then it should be fine. i would as k does that mean she wont lay any, or does that mean if she does lay any they will be ok. i dont really think he...

the3ofus+oursixchicks : scratch'n'peck : Poor Daisey. Rosey's still the boss. Taking her out in the less direct sunlight of the evening may be less likely to trigger ovulation and egg laying. yes i am trying to keep her out of the direct sun. what time do you think i should take her out and...

egg is stuck inside skin and is hanging on the hens bottom

Quote: I have the same question as above. I think I have read where after being stitched around the vent if they heal, the chance of prolapse decreases. I actually think a stretch of a few hours at once may be preferable. I have a poor Cochin hen who has an internal laying problem and I try...

egg is stuck inside skin and is hanging on the hens bottom

I just read the whole thread. You and Rosie and your whole family have been through a lot the past few days. I have learned more about prolapse by reading your thread. I'm glad that you have vets in the area who treat chickens and that you have your follow up appointment tomorrow. You sound...

egg is stuck inside skin and is hanging on the hens bottom

Applying a little vegetable oil to lubricate the area wouldn't hurt either. Egg bound means the egg won't pass out of the vent. Warm baths or even sometimes putting the hen under a heat lamp can help them relax their muscles to help them pass the egg.
