Post here if you DON'T wash clean-looking eggs

I've found some like that in the pen or under the roost. They get tossed, needless to say. :sick

Quote: Maybe the same guy that made yours made our first one. The roosts were right in line with the boxes and they liked roosting in them. We covered them up but our new coop has roosts by the floor.

Quote: If you do a search I think there have been polls of all opinions. I just posted this because I was hoping to single out the non-washers to see how many there are.

Post here if you DON'T wash clean-looking eggs

I think I posted this somewhere recently, but this shows how the thing the egg comes through goes inside out (sorta) which makes it somewhat of a barrier between the egg chute and the other chute. http://www.afn.org/~poultry/egghen.htm After thinking about it some more it kind of reminds me...

Quote: If I used those I'd want to use a new wipe for each egg (or else you'd get into cross contamination-the wipes don't kill germs) and that would be way too expensive.

Quote: Ours sit on the counter until there's enough for a dozen, and then they go in the refrigerator in a carton. If there is dirt, I wipe it off with a paper towel wet with hot water right before putting them in the fridge. So far none have had visible poop-just muddy streaks when it's been...

Quote: I agree with that. However, after doing searches there are countless threads about how and when people do wash eggs but I didn't find any specifically asking about NOT washing eggs. That's why I was curious.

Quote: Thanks but...I was trying to get a feel for how many DON'T wash the eggs. Not wash the eggs right before eating but not at all. But 8 pages and the majority don't wash at all so I think I feel comfortable doing the same.

Quote: I have actually been doing that because of possible blood spots, etc that I might want to pick out. If a shell falls in though, I actually probably wouldn't even worry about it since the dish would be cooked. But I wouldn't crack an egg with poop on the shell. I'd for sure wipe that off...

Post here if you DON'T wash clean-looking eggs

Thanks everyone. As it says in my signature, I'm very germophobic. So I was wrestling with how to proceed. At first, we got a few eggs that had some ick on them due to being laid on the coop floor and getting stepped on. So I washed them but after I did, all I could think about was that poop...

Just curious how many just use eggs as is right from the nest if there isn't visible poop on them. I'm talking for cooked eggs and dishes, not raw.
