@TJordan Any reported avian influenza cases near you? With the dead ducks I'd be a bit worried. I would not let them near the rest of my flock, and I'd be very wary about washing hands etc. Also, contacting the authorities and unloading those ducks ASAP might be a good idea...
TJ, don't know if they'll continue to sit, but I can tell you that the double mommy system is pretty handy, I've got our second batch of chicks growing up with it at the moment.
I don't think the cedar will be much of an issue, that thing looks well ventilated, and I think the biggest issues have been with using cedar shavings as bedding, the surface area allowing for evaporation of aromatic oils in shavings is exponentially larger than what you get in constructions...
@WldFlwrs Nice looking coop. I hope the girls find the nest boxes dark enough, you might need to come up with something for them if they don't lay in them.
By the way, has anyone tried attaching half a pipe high up on their run on the outside to deter climbing predators? Something that looks a bit like the top of modern prison walls? I think that would be an interesting experiment for someone with a flimsier net on top of their run, but also...
Darma, I like hanging them from a chain, and attaching the cable to another point, so that the chain supports it but the cable will act as a safety if the chain should fail for some weird reason, that I can't think of.
Always nice to have something sturdy to stand on when doing stuff at an altitude. I sometimes find myself wondering "What the heck am I doing?" when standing on top of a ladder, balanced on a table, stabilized with two planks, trying to reach that little spot in the corner with the paintbrush.
Bruce, I'm guessing all they need is a screwdriver to take apart the run and move it.
On the nettles, I should be getting my very own soon. Or in a few months at least.
TJ and Sylvester, I agree that it wouldn't work in just any flock, you know your flock the best and need to judge the situation yourself. So far we've tried incubating inside and keeping chicks in a brooder, we've tried hatching with a broody and keeping chicks in the coop with a separator...
TJ, yeah, they're fine in there. I've got them with two broodies, a grown roo, one layer, and four 4-month old cockerels. My biggest worry is that they will find their way out into the run before they're able to climb back in. But we decided to try as hands off of an approach with this batch as...
And remember, different blades are good for different purposes. For the wire, you can use the super thin and cheap ones. You can also cut plastic with one, and other materials.
