Over 700 posts since last visit lol. Sold nineteen chicks recently, not a bad start. Had one sitting but the eggs went rotten, I blame the heat. Thinking of getting an incubator myself, maybe hatch some turkeys. Nice drop of rain today, good relief from the heat and good for the farm/garden...
Yeah Bogan Gate's a real place lol. Anyway, apparently there was an explosion at a fire works factory.
Rain's been an anticlimax, barely wet the back cement. Came up real windy 15 mins ago and there's supposed to be a chance of storms.
Not holding my breath though.
@SandeeC It's threatening rain but so far not much. We had a bit of a storm yesterday arvo but it mostly just passed us.I noticed things were looking heavy your way this morning. Here's hoping we don't get any bushfires from these storms. I heard something started up around Bogan Gate...
Sadly it didn't stick around for long, but rain is due about monday I believe.
I'm between Cowra and Young, things are very dry at the moment and there's alot of fuel about. A fire would be potentially catastrophic.
We didn't quite hit the 40 mark, came closer than I'd like though. Cold change and rain came through on saturday which was most welcome.
Sunny again but quite pleasant, even drenched a few hundred lambs this morning. Managed to sell ten of my chicks to a neighbour yesterday which is great...
Supposed to get up to 40c and Russian warships are in our waters, what a day.
Luckily 20-40mm of rain is on the way and the temps supposed to drop right back tomorrow night.
p.s cat seems nice and recovered
p.p.s Saw the Rolling Stones Wednesday night, so amazing!
I was thinking a tick, but all the vets I talked to seemed certain it was a snake though. Plus there's a little one living around the shearing shed.
Vet also said that it's dehydration and exposure that kills them, and not venom. If you can get to them you just have to keep them hydrated and...
Me and this little fella don't like snakes (brown snakes)
On friday morning he collapsed out of his chair and was meowing very weakly. Paralysis slowly took hold of him throughout the rest of the morning and he lost his voice. Spoke to several vets and the diagnosis was a snake bite. Anyway...
Lol it's that time of year for Magpie's. There's one that harasses me at the gate to one of the paddocks. It's been like that for at least the last four years around this time. He's got me a few times and drawn blood. People ask me why don't I just shoot him, but he only bothers me for about a...
Thanks all for the advice on lice a few weeks ago. I feel it's definitely slowed it down.
However ten chicks and counting have been hatched and I think they have lice. Would it be safe to rub the powder (pestone) on my hands and then rub it on to the chicks.
A friend told me that powder isn't...
Got a 3rd clucky chook and am hoping to have eggs under her soon. I've noticed one of the broody one's squawk and shake itself like mad when it hops off for a feed. Could it be lice?
I might just stick with pure sussex. How many eggs can I have under a chook at a time? Would nine be to many? I had eight but found an extra one under her today.
First thing in morning I'm going to mark the ones they've been sitting on.
I think I've got another broody girl. What would I get from an Isa Brown crossed with a light sussex? should I hatch them or just stick with
pure sussex?
One of the sussex girls has gone broody and I've got about 8 eggs under her. Very excited and fingers crossed.
What would I get with a xbred (Isa brown) crossed with a sussex? I've seen him having a ride on them and the eggs are fertile.
But I've only got the sussex eggs under the chook.
Hope everyone had a nice relaxing Easter, I missed out.
Spent a good chunk of friday sitting in a tractor, marked over 200 lambs on saturday, collected fire wood today and butchered a lamb this morning. Sunday was fairly quiet though, drank a few too many though. Brother in law shot a fox...
@Fancychooklady
Thanks, I might also try some of the the advice you gave kat. It sounds very similiar.
@satay
How long has it been missing? Chooks are good at hiding. After a dog/fox attack I've seen them hide for hours, and come out of the woodwork very slowly.
Granted I'am on a farm...
Hey all its been awhile.
Sad to say I discovered my biggest (I was 90% sure he was a rooster) light sussex dead this morning. He'd been acting pretty docile the last two days, was on his own and also seemed sleepy too. I've seen these symptoms various times over the years in other chooks. My...
