Teila, not sure if we are allowed to pick favourites here or not, and your whole flock is absolutely gorgeous, but that little Lulu is just stunning! How beautiful is she! Does she have a friendly nature to boot? Oh, how I miss having my chickens... - Krista

Hi Teila Yep, Fire Ant is one out of the box! She is a cranky, complaining little old lady of a chicken, even at her young age - she's only 18 months old! She is also bossy, and fussy, and kicks up a huge fuss if other chickens sit in her nest. Or lay an egg. Or God forbid, stand near her...

Sounds like a fantastic start Hoping she makes a full and fast recovery for you You have given her a fighting chance. - Krista

Hi @appps I only pop into this thread from time to time, so I hope you don't mind me commenting on your post this morning. It just struck a bit of a chord with me, and I wanted to lend you my support. My Buff Orpington girl, Fire Ant (yes, she is the Queen of the Coop!) presented with a...

Hi Teila, Thanks for taking the time to reply. Yes, I will have to block off the nest boxes but I can let her roost overnight. (She sneaks back to the nest, even under the cover of darkness!) Thank you! - Krista

Hi all. Hope you don't mind me dropping in with a quick question for my fellow Aussies? I have a broody Orpington, who this afternoon went into the Buster Cage to be broken. My question is, will it be too cold for her to stay out overnight? We are expecting it to drop to 8 degrees...

YES! Only one out of eight hens laying. Four broody hens who are perpetually broody - I bust them, and then a week later they're back in the buster cage. Coop and run look like a feather factory. It's this heat I tell you! Too much! Turn it down!!! - Krista

I watch a bit from time to time, but I'm not obsessed with it. I must tell you though, I'm a Carlton supporter - your mortal enemy! - Krista

Lol, I had four (yes, four!) broody hens last week, and whilst three were prepared to be reasonable about it, one was a bitey birdy! She tried her very best to take a piece out of me, but once I had tipped her out of the nest she lost her bravado! (There must be something about being rolled...

Personally, I've always found that as the old saying goes "Their bark is worse than their bite." A whole lot of puffing up, screeching, and some mild pecking attempts but nothing that would actually do you any damage. Then, when I actually pick them up, they turn into big sooks who whine at me...

I just wanted to extend my condolences to both of you on your losses. It is always sad to lose a loved family pet. My thoughts are with you both. - Krista

Hi all We have had several (6) days of 40+ degrees, and finally the rain has broken through. The trouble is, as it is still so hot and humid and still, that my entire dirt run has grown a fine layer of fluffy mould over it! It is too big to consider putting a layer of sand or anything else...

We are doing a full strip of the coop and spray down of everything tomorrow morning. Sounds like a lot of fun, particularly since we have to dodge the snake while we do it! I agree with you in your comments about snakes. We have 2 shovels by the coop 'just in case'. Not that I want to be...

Hi everyone, Today has been ONE OF THOSE DAYS. I feel like folding myself into a little ball on the floor and not getting up again. Amongst other things, today: * I found Red Mites right through my isolation pen. I presume they must also be in the main coop - although the main coop...

Oh, that's so sad. I'm very sorry for your loss. What breed and age were you pullets? I have five 11 week old chicks at the moment and they live in a tin garden shed converted into a coop. On the really hot days (35+) I put them in a wire dog crate and then hide it away under a shady tree...

Sure, happy to share My girl is a Buff Orpington, approximately 13 to 14 months old. She is currently in moult, and has not laid an egg for about 6 or 7 weeks. I noticed that she was a little lethargic last Tuesday. She would stand in the run (never sit, just stand) and stare off into...

I hadn't thought of that, thank you. I have ordered a 4.5kg bag of the DE (if nothing else, maybe they can use it to fluff around in next Winter!) but I will try your suggestions. I have only had 1 girl with a respiratory issue, but one is enough. Luckily I picked it up early and was able to...

OK, thanks. May I ask if the DE was effective? I have heard mixed reports. - Krista
