There's two things I can't seem to keep; lavender and fig trees. The late cold snaps kill the fig trees, and the heat kills the lavender. -

Your area is much better suited to fall gardening....with summer crops....We don't actually have long growing seasons....you more than I...but still....we have two very short ones...with a heat tempest in the middle when everything but okra and cactus dies.... It's hard to imagine starting... -

Well....ummmm....big plants have big leaves!!!!! Leaves feed the plant....the bigger.....and faster growing....the plant....generally....the bigger the leaves the seedling is going to have....again....(generally) ....bush squash plants...are going to start out smaller than vining... -

OK....I've had a big problem with a "leaf affliction " on my beans this year as well....which is usually on my tomatoes.... I'm pretty sure I know what it is too.....spider mites...check the underside of the leaves very carefully for dark spots and webs.... -

Gosh....yeah...cukes don't need a very high support and aren't picky...you could take two sticks....string a wire between them. ...and attach 6-pack plastic holders with pull tabs hanging down from the wire with pull tabs..... JK.....but barely...got any chicken wire? -
