The first two little ones have left for their new home. Kind of sad , but I'm happy to spread the duckie love! Since I only had 3 girls hatch, we're keeping them all and giving away our surplus males. The people we gave the ducks to tonight said they'd be interested in getting females from...

I know at least one family only wants them for pets, so they should be fine with it. I'll have to ask my back-up family if they are OK with it. The girls are #2 Hyacinth (over marked blue fawn?), #4 (chocolate, first picture on post 50) and #7 (blue bullseye on back, first pic on post 56)...

Well, we just sexed the last to hatch and decided to re-sex all the older ducklings because we had gotten a suspiciously large number of girls. After we re-sexed everybody, the final count is 3 girls, 6 boys. So, now what? 1) How many boys can I keep? I had intended to keep six ducks...

I think #9 does, but I'll definitely keep an eye on him. #8 was extremely weak and wouldn't have made it out of the shell if we didn't help, so I need to make sure that one is healthy, too. Thanks for the re-homing advice!

OK, I can't make you wait in agony too long. :) Haven't sexed these last ones yet. Here's #7: #8 And the last little one, #9:

Question for you: We are going to keep six of our babies and have friends who are going to take whichever three we give them. I'm not sure how I can pick which ones to keep since they are all so cute, but I'm going to try and look at it from a breeder standpoint. What should I be looking for in...

Three more have hatched and the final three should hatch today. So pretty! And here's the early birds all dried off. From left to right: Hyacinth, Valentino, and Morning Glory. We vent sexed them and H and MG are girls, V is a boy. Hyacinth's tail is definitely blue, then...

Duckling #3! That's duck #2 on the left. Any guesses as to what his color will be? Duck #3 is pretty dark. I can't tell if he's chocolate or black.

Thank you! I actually had come across this when I was researching incubation. I was trying to explain it to DH last night and I couldn't remember where I had read this.

I couldn't find any either so I ordered eggs from Toadbriar. I highly recommend her. She packed the eggs very well, shipped quickly, and has been extremely helpful when I had questions. There are at least three of us who have hatched her eggs in the last month and the babies are gorgeous.

Yeah, I worried about that happening. Morning Glory is snug in her brooder and this little guy is safe from her attentions. It does look like the sac is getting smaller.

Duck #2 is out, but I'm worried about it. I think I saw unabsorbed yolk attached to it. I had a hatchery chick shipped to me with the same condition and it didn't make it. Hope this little one does! I'm not sure what color this will end up being. Lavender maybe? Morning Glory keeps...

The first duckling is doing well. He's walking around pushing the other eggs and has started harrassing his siblings that are pipping. DH and I did end up very carefully widening the pip holes for the two eggs that pipped 30+ hours ago. One of them stuck its little beak out. Well, little Morning...

We have a duckling! I was awakened at 4:00 AM by very loud peeping. The egg that pipped at 8:00 AM yesterday was hatching! I got to watch the whole thing and it was amazing. At this point I got REALLY excited because it was apparent that this little one has gorgeous...

Hehe! I'm typing with my toes to tell you that I have another pip for a total of five. It seems like I get another pip every five hours or so. Strange.

Thank you! I need to hear this over and over. How long would you wait until you intervene? The three eggs that have pipped literally just have that inital pyramid-shaped bump + a little cracking.
