It’s been a wild summer. We had a couple osprey living next door, then an eagle attacked a hen. Gunther the rooster scared it off and newly named “Lucky” is recovered and back in with the flock.
The chickens have worms, so we’re treating them with valbazen that we had on hand. Those of you on...
I’d prefer something smaller and clever. Mostly I need a hawk alarm.
we’re butchering them all this year, and if we decide we’re up for it, we’ll get some ewes to breed and raise our own flock next year. I would love to raise them for dairy (dorpers aren’t the best breed for that, but they are...
We got sheep yesterday! They should be ready for the table in a few months.
We have tons of apple cleanup to do. I hope some of them stay on the trees long enough to make cider!
Sadly, Gunther’s days are numbered. He goes for weeks as a good chicken, and then he’ll pretty randomly attack...
Is anyone near enough to Olympia to buy some layer feed from me for .41/lb? I bought 300 lbs then decided to get chicks and can’t feed the calcium any more. 🙄
Mill date was February, so I don’t want it to go bad.
Lots of cooking for me too today. I finally made King Arthur Flour’s cinnamon rolls. They’re sooooo good! Took forever though. I don’t think I’ll make them again.
The cheepos are on the roost with Buffo and the other big birds tonight! I hope they’re warm enough. They’re only about five weeks old and the Orpingtons still have fluff on their heads. I hope they’ll be warm enough. They were out in the rain all day today too. 😳
A feed store here in Olympia has oyster pellets of some sort. They were $.50 per lb bulk or bagged, but now it’s about $40 per 50 lb bag. I asked the last time I was there, and the guy said one of the major oyster shell companies closed because of the pandemic and then had to relicense and had a...
Buffo’s cheepos are getting so big! The leghorns are fully into awkward preteen age (3+ week) and the Orpingtons have fully feathered wings and tufts on their backs.
There are so many good things about having a broody raise the chicks. They seem so happy, they’re able to do more, and they seem...
Buffo has been going out with the cheepos every day for a few days now! It’s so much fun to see her teach them to scratch. The leghorns are so tall and proud. I’m enjoying this so much, and I don’t think I’ll ever use a brooder again if I don’t have to! She’s doing a good job taking care of...
The local feed store was having trouble a couple months ago. Then I switched to layer feed and it stopped being an issue. I’m about to have to get some when I switch back to all flock because of Buffo’s cheepos.
Buffo and the cheepos came out for an adventure! She was fine with this Easter egger hanging around most of the time. She even didn’t really object to her eating the chick starter from their feeder. But when one of the barred rocks got near them... feathers flew. 😄
Buffo and the cheepos are still staying in the pen. She came out briefly earlier and stretched a bit. She was a little wobbly on her feet, and she stayed in the coop and talked to the chicks while she was out. I don’t know if she was calling them to her or not.
The leghorns are almost two weeks...
