Awwwww.... I LOVE my Silkie broodies so much! Right now my two Silkies and an Araucana are raising six chicks between all of them. They get along with everybody and are such good Mommies!
Your girls are really beautiful!
It is MUCH easier to submit to a broody than watch them suffer from weight loss and craziness. I almost lost my first broody thinking I could "break" her. I finally threw three eggs under her and she happily hatched two of them for me. I wish I was closer to you, I would happily give you some...
I have leghorns and they are lovely little birds. They give me huge eggs almost every day. I had 3 but a predator took 1 so I am down to two. I also have a Leghorn/Araucana cockerel out of them. He is HUGE but very friendly and curious - which is the way his Araucana sire is. I think a lot...
I had a dog that THOUGHT she wanted to chase chickens. I don't know if it was Ian Dunbar but it was maybe a 70ish dog training book. It had what was called a "penny can". You take some pennies and put them in a candy tin then tape it shut. You follow the dog and as soon as they show ANY...
I am planning on going to the WFF show in Chehalis. I will be showing a double tufted black bantam pullet Araucana I purchased from Steve Waters. I have never shown a chicken before so he gave me a list of things to do to prepare for the show. My first show I ever attended was at Vancouver a...
The best Easter Eggers I have had have been the ones from McMurray Hatchery. Several of us will go together to get the minimum order of 25 of several breeds. All of the Easter Eggers from them have laid blue-green or green-blue eggs, never any "pink" (which are really light brown) or other...
I feed FlockRaiser to my free ranging chickens year round. It is 20% protein and really helps them during molt and winter to stay healthy. I have had a couple of broodies that raised chicks and I kept this in a bowl right in front of them. They maintained excellent health.
What is so crazy is the guy next to us shoots his gun several times a week "training" his hunting dogs. Somebody up and over the hill must be super rich because sometimes he'll shoot off an - automatic? - at 40 rounds a clip I swear. I don't know much about guns but we got all kinds of them...
I know you can shoot coyotes and normally I could care less about them. Unfortunately, this one has gotten some pretty easy chicken dinners and he is out in daylight hours. I talked to my husband and he has a fellow at work who hunts coyotes and he is going to talk to him. The other problem...
I knew you cannot touch a bird of prey. I had about 5 chickens early this spring taken by a Bald Eagle. Those 5 chickens never would scatter when the rooster gave warning. The pullets I have now stay under the trees and when the rooster gives warning, they all immediately hide. I know I am...
