I'm jumping in without reading the whole thread. I've only lived in CT and upstate NY but right now, with the places I've been, I'd suggest looking at southern Ohio or Pennsylvania. That's without knowing a lot about the cost of living, job market, politics, etc. Just knowing I liked what I saw...
