I agree that your mystery hen was most likely due to employee error. "Chick days" are just that. A few days of the year when they farm stores sell chicks. Some employees may be knowledgeable about chickens; other not so much. Their goal is to keep chicks alive until sold. However in your...
Yep, it’s the same girl. We still have “Trouble “. She’s a very vocal old hen. She's still feisty and strong willed. Never wants to be held or pet, but will land on us for treats. When upset she makes such a ruckus - her “chicken swears”. Sometimes she even crows to tell everyone that she’s in...
That's definitely a thing!
My DD has her old, beloved, Silkie hen, named Xansie. That hen helped her get through Jr High, high school, and now college. She has a cage in my daughter's room. She usually spends the day outside with her flock and sleeps inside at night. Of course with the recent...
Much of her personality has to do with how she was raised. DS plays with her daily so she's very comfortable being handled and walking around the house. (She will follow him up and down the stairs with ease.) Her siblings went to my friend's house. Those Spitzies like to roam free and sleep...
I do not live near you, but have you considered doing it yourself? It took me several years to psychologically prepare myself into trying. (and also several Youtube videos) I had a farm-raised handyman who offered to teach me. Honestly the decision to process was the hardest part. He was a...
Thank you!! :love
Although the chicks are cute, I think your adults are the best. The pics labeled Inara (the fluffiest hen ever) and Pete (the tiny hunk) are my favs.

If I did not have already have a brooder with chicks, I'd be asking for directions to your house!! I love those silkied Cochins! Personally, I hope you keep breeding them because they are on my "someday" wish list. In the meantime, could you post some Cochin...
And here's "Miss Take"
She hatched early (Monday) but was supposed to hatch today.
We set the quail eggs on the same day so allowed the hen to sit on what we thought were 4 infertile eggs. Oops. Oh well, I just let the serama keep the ONE egg.
I'm pretty good about getting hens to adopt chicks...
My Serama Mama was steadily adopting them. (Just a few to start to make sure she's good with it.)
Success! She has 15 quail + 1 serama tonight. Nice and quiet in the brooder.
I’ve got some jumbo quail hatching right now. So tiny. I had to lighten the pic because this one is dark. Probably a Tuxedo or Tibetan quail. (Most will be Pearl)
He loves his chickens - grew up with them. We have some very funny stories of times when others tried to feed him store bought eggs. I guess he has a sensitive palate.
His true passion is STEM. He loves computer programming. He just finished a grant proposal to the farm bureau to build a...
Not hatching yet, but our son still plays with his Spitzhauben daily. She follows him around inside and out. She does stairs, plays fetch, and jumps up into his lap when called (or if she just wants to be near him)
Here’s a pic of our son playing video games and his chicken watching his progress.
My silly Spitzhauben made this week's caption contest. (She was actually adjusting her crop but that photo has a lot of possible interpretations.)

The "sweetness" can easily be achieved by handling your chicks. Orpingtons LOVE their food, so treats will win over almost any aged Orpington. I only had one Orpington hen who disliked being touched. I admit I never held her as a chick. She was beautiful, but wild. She would come running...
Technically all orps are English, but the UK standards have a lot more fluff. More rounded - almost like cochins. It was very costly to get imported Orpingtons into the US back in 2011. In 2013 I got my 1st orp = a lavender with 50% imported English bloodlines because that's all I could...
