Thanks. I will have to check at TSC and see if they carry anything that might work, or maybe my feed store. Sounds like I'll have to tackle the buggers regardless. My wether is STRONG. I'm grateful he's not a ram but still... I'm a small person. Anyone else out there not much bigger than...
Anybody have any tricks to getting a halter on a flighty horned (Jacob) sheep? I've got one of the leather types. Getting the thing over the horns is near impossible. And if I do get it over, they fling it off before I can get the lead hooked on. If I start with the lead on, I can't get it...
They make an electric netting for sheep that is almost identical to poultry netting. I don't know about chicken wire against electric fencing though. Wouldn't that short?
Familiar, no. But I know about it, the basic idea. I came across the chart on the internet while waiting for some advice about de-worming and that's how I knew to get them tested. My wether came up to me later that day and I just pulled his lower lid down real quick. It looked pretty pale to...
That's exactly how they're acting. I noticed last night as I was shutting things up that they *could* act normal but then would revert to the twitchiness if I got too close. I guess I just don't know what's triggered the behavior, the medicine or the heat or both... I didn't notice any flies...
I have another question. My sheep got their safeguard pellets yesterday, dosed by the vet. Today they're laying down most all day and when disturbed they freak out, jumpy, stomping, heads down. Not themselves at all, like they're on sheep crack or something. It's weird. A reaction to the med...
Yeah, they're fed in the barn in a hay feeder off the ground. Should be good there. It's just all the grass growing in the muck that they're rooting for that bothers me. I'll just keep on the testing. They said to bring another sample in a month to make sure the safeguard worked. The thing...
Thanks for all the information! I like the name "sacrifice pen". That's exactly what it is and it's overgrazed and nasty just like you said. I took a sample in yesterday to the farm service and it came back positive for some parasite or another. It was hard to understand the lady over the...
I have another stupid question. I know the last one hasn't been answered yet and that's usually a signal to shut up but here I go again anyway...
Does putting sheep out to pasture mean you keep them strictly inside otherwise? If I de-worm my sheep and they go straight out to the pasture...
Awwwwww... *swoons* Such sweet faces.
Just one picture from me. All sheared now. I had my husband help me with the wether, even though I guess I really didn't need the help, just the reinforcement. I got him on his rump before my husband even entered the pen. But it was nice knowing...
TwinWillowAcres, in my next life, I will have some Babydoll Southdowns, lol. How is the wool on the crosses? Similar? So many breeds, so little time.
Well, I sheared two of my sheep today, the ewes. I meant to do all three but the big guy (wether) was too strong for me by myself so I'll...
I don't feed my sheep a sheep mix, except as a treat to train them to be personable (a handful as a reward). They eat pasture and hay when pasture isn't available. That's it, along with their free choice minerals and water. But I'm no expert either.
Aw, they look great! So pretty (and as messy as mine are right now for all the hay). I will be shearing my own but I only have hand shears and zero experience so no help from me, lol.
Thanks guys, helpful info. My own research didn't turn up anything about the toxicity presenting itself later, when the animal becomes stressed so that's very helpful indeed.
