OLIVE EGGERS!!!
I just hatched out (4) chicks, (1) with feathered legs. They are a Black Ameraucauna(purebred)/a Golden Salmon Marans cull. She laid really dark eggs but she was missing the Salmon. The chicks look like they will be black like the Daddy. My Ameraucaunas lay nice sky blue...

I'll have to get it tomorrow. I thought she was a she because she had a big red comb and thick legs. She laid her first really dark egg the other day.

Yea, I have a 6 month old cock that just started laying the darkest egg.
I thought I read on here that the almost black ones are pullets and the copper striped ones are cockerals at 4 weeks old? Is this true?
That's really something else there....a cock that lays eggs? And 6 months...

At what age does everyone cull/dress out their extra cockerals?
I now have about 75 BCM chicks from 4 days to 5 weeks old.
All of these chicks come from light colored eggs so they aint Marans. I've finally came to that realization now that one of my pullets started laying a really dark egg. My...

You have some beautiful birds.
Kathyinmo,
Thanks for the pic of your beautiful Blue Marans roo. I have a Blue Jersey Giant roo that was a very light blue. He is a year old and starting to molt on his head and the feathers look darker. I hope so.

Geebs, I made little boxes/dividers out of the plastic canvas with holes in it used for some kind of needle work. You can get it at the craft store. I used small zip ties to put them together.
I hatch weekly! April Fools Day Hatch is next!!
Is there a difference in Blue Marans and...

Thanks for the reply peeps. I just don't understand it. I love blue chickens as you can see by my signature. I would just like to know how this happened. I have a BCM cock and (3) BCM hens and (1) Golden Salmon (w/o salmon) hen. Could it have possibly came out of the GSM? One...
Hello all,
I think I have some Blue chicks coming out of my BCMs. Here's a pic of one of them. This is my first year breeding BCMs. I have various strains. I guess the Blue gene is recessive? I had a beautiful Golden Salmon (without the salmon) that laid my darkest egg in with them. I have...

Thanks geebs,
I can see with this and the past few posts that I have a lot of studying to do. I guess I'll have to go over all the past posts...this is 400 and what?????
Thanks for the insight and info. So I guess the best thing I can do with her is to sell her, not as a Golden Salmon...

Did you hatch her? If so, do you remember what her chick down looked like?
No I didn't hatch her. I got her as a chick. I was looking at my Welsummers a few minutes ago and it looks to me that they have salmon (pinkish) breast feathers. I got them a few weeks ago and haven't had a...

The most important thing is that she doesn't have a salmon-colored breast. Her breast is light, yes -- but not pinkish. The variety is called "salmon" because of that salmon-pink breast in the hens.
I don't know what she is. There are some black coppers that have lost lots and lots of...
Could someone help me decide which one should be top cock?
The brothers are (5) months old. They are from Bev Davis and Julie Gabbard lines. One has more feathering on legs and and a lighter colored hackle, He is already doing his JOB!
I have them in with my (3) BCs, (1) Golden Salmon...

If your birds are solid black then they don't have any blue genes in them. If they did, they would be blue instead of black. As Amazondoc stated, a black marans should be extended black (E/E). A birchen (ER/ER) aka black copper that looks black has too many melanizers in it and can't be...
