interesting point. i think i am going to focus on egg color, because i can make more $ (FEED BILL! lol) on dark eggs than i can on selling eggs for breeding--at least in the short term! i will certainly take your advice and let people know if i do go that route.
5 mos 21 days, one of three CMs i own laid. i think this is a neat egg but it may be totally normal and boring to you guys.
i have never gotten a speckled egg before so i am happy with it...though it is not terribly darfk, it's cool and as i work on my eclectic eggs project, this may be...

thanks geebs! i know i am impatient but i'm not going to cull this one, i just think s/he is interesting and my curiosity is seriously piqued.
the bolded...it's very interesting that you said that (about one of my "obvious" roo pics)--you're good! that "obvious roo" has NO saddle...
geebs, i posted a few pics earlier today of that possible pullet/roo we were discussing the other day. everyone seems as confused about the sex as i am! if you get a chance to take a look, holler or reply.
and i remember fondly the time when i had just ten birds. that was before i incubated...

I've had roos that were not as assertive as other hatch mates and matured slower, they also like to hang out with the girls and not particulary interested in play fighting with the other boys, even upon maturity they were non-aggressive and also crowed later.
anything undesirable about...
it's odd...it has the look in its eye of a roo--like it wants to jump on something...the "fierceness". maybe? but it moves like a lady and lays with the ladies all the time. and it never fights with the two roos who fight all the time. sigh.
geebs told me to hold out a bit of hope that this one of my 5 FCBMs just might be a pullet. i guess s/he has had a few birds that had similar characteristics and were great hens.
at 9.5 weeks...a few things make me think roo--big comb/wattles compared to the 2 "obvious" hens, and the...
i'm considering running a sprinkler today. like the other person in my neck of the woods we have a heat index today of 110.
my birds seem ok, but i did notice that mama hen (black java) has taken leave of her foster baby FCBMs sooner than i expected. i think 1) they don't need to be warmed up...

I wish it was just warm here! HA It is hotter than blue blazes! I couldn't even hardly stand to be outside the past two days!
yeah. you and i are in the same area, and we've all been under an extreme heat advisory for several days now, so maybe you have too? it's almost impossible to...
so what are the fun aspects for you wynette? i do not love my fcbm's or my cm's personality, compared to my black javas (elegant, stately, reserved, calm) or my EEs (curious, bold, even affectionate). my marans (both types) are more like my brown leghorns...skiittish and flighty. they are the...
my three cuckoo marans are 21 weeks old and their faces just went CRIMSON in the last week. i can't wait!~it's sooooo hard when you have never had a dark brown egg before. hope i am swimming in eggs soon too! they are my only pullets about to lay, and everyone else is 1.5-3 years old, so...
no expert but i recently got my first FCBMs, and put them with a bunch of stuff i had hatched out (see my sig for details on what i have). then i got 5 more and put under a broody black java. i have many breeds if you count the adults and babies and bothy the week olds and the 6 week old FCBMs...
yep, geebs, when mine were 1.5 wks most on here who responded thought i had maybe 1 pullet, now it looks like 2 maybe 3. pretty neat!
and that is cool about my dark "roo" maybe being a weird great hen, lol. was going to keep that one as roo anyway, due to size and temperament, so now i'll...
three of five of my newest babes...foster broody is taking such good care of them i hardly ever see them but the kids helped me scoop some up...
i am at the point with my six week olds of trying to make a decision on which roo (just one) to keep. one of my pullets has tons of brown on her, and...
five new fcbms, day olds, since the last five seem to be a little heavy on testosterone. introduced them to a ten day broody (black java) hen who was looking bad in the 100 degree heat. hopefully she will take them under her wing!
ugh, i have been holding out hope for 1 and 3...sigh. good thing i only paid $5 each. lady i bought from has some 5 week olds and i'll be MUCH better able to choose pullets from that group. these were week olds when i got them.
ok, my FCBMs are 4 weeks now. obviously some of these are roos. i will likely keep one roo, whichever looks best for breeeding. i guess i need to wait quite a while longer to decide on that though!
i have one that is super big and mossy. crazy amount of feathers too. :rolleyes:hopefully...
i had read the early copper is one thing often considered a problem but is more common in the jeane line and not a problem in those birds. maybe b/c those birds tend to have more color?
thoughts?
