Quote: Hi Megcpat! Yes there is such a thing as Splash Copper Marans. Those two pullets are not splash copper, matter of fact, they look identical to a Wellie x Marans or Wellie cross Wheatons maybe. This is an old photo but he still looks the same...this is a Splash Copper Marans roo...

Howdy all. Is there such a thing as Splash Copper Marans? I bought these two pullets as such, but as they grow up, I can't help but think that they look an awful lot like Wellies. A search on BYC turns up pages and pages of threads on Blue Splash Marans......

wow, that IS a dramatic color difference. It's hard to tell from the photo, but are they spotted as well? Were they spotted before they took their break?

Oh yes, many of mine refuse to behave by the book also, but that is what makes chicken keeping so much fun!!!

Part of Frizzle's hen behavior may be due to the daily egg cycle of hens..... 25 hours for an egg to be created and layed, so each day an egg is layed a bit later than the day before and eventually, instead of laying eggs at night, they take a day or so off to reset this cycle. Then they start...

Not Stupid!!! I think I responded to your length of cycle question at the same time as you were responding to me, so forgive me if you already saw my reply of 18 months for a typical laying cycle according to all the books, but my own girls do not always lay for anything like 18 month lengths.

Oh, and I think that the typical answer to how long a laying cycle is is 18 months, but I have a darling Easter Egger who just finished her first molt and she is not yet a year old, so........ just when you think you've got something in the poultry world figured out, those darned little birds...

I think that going broody is being confused with a laying cycle here. If a hen decides to set her eggs, she will stop laying until some time after she is taken off of the nest, but this is not the thing as a laying cycle. You are absolutely correct to associate the molt with the end of a cycle...

So, Wynette, in your flock, so you have to work hard to maintain the dark egg laying abilities of your consecutive generations, or is pretty easy?

I understand the human labeling and how and why and all of that, but biologically speaking, that bird that will not lay a # 4 egg ever is a Marans, and, at least here in the states where there is so little Maran blood to use in bringing up different lines of standard quality birds, don't we need...

Well, they sure are selling some light "BCMarans" eggs on e-bay!!!!!!! But that has always made me wonder if they are legit. By the way, who is blackdotte?

When I said " it is odd to read that man's comments", I meant the blackdotte quote, not you rusty'swoman. I have just never heard of an inferior of a breed not being labeled with the breed name.

Hmmmm, so what do you call the small percentage of Marans chickens that will not lay a dark egg even though their dam and sire are both dark egg layers? Or who have too much feathering on too may toes though their parents have the one feathered toe per standard? Genetics always throws us some...

That does NOT mean that it is not a Maran, just that it is not a dark egg laying Maran. The genes for dark egg color are there, it just takes some careful breeding to bring it out.
