I love the color of that roo, and the overall body type of the hens is exceptional. Well done. Quote:

rustyswoman, you should never have to apologize for a "lack of knowledge" concerning these BCM's. The fact of the matter is that NOBODY knows the answers. There is NO clearcut blueprint for improving these birds to produce dark eggs AND conform to the proposed standard. Even the early, well...

Geebs, I certainly appreciate you taking the time to respond to my question, but my question was "is there any documented proof?" I have all the respect in the world for Bev Davis and what she has contributed to the development of these birds. There should be more breeders that share her...

Is there any documented proof that breeding an "overly red" rooster to a "too black" hen will "correct" both problems in subsequent offspring? It sounds ok on the surface, but I simply don't buy into the concept that breeding two birds with significant, serious, color faults will somehow...

If they're only laying "3's" now, they're not Marans chickens anymore are they? Your words, not mine, remember? Quote:

I asked the same question, and the thread degraded until it was closed by the mods. I never got an answer to the original question, which pretty much was "What IS an offspring of a pair of pure Marans that meet the standard, with the hen laying very dark eggs, if the offspring hen lays only a...

Very eloquently put Patty, and so true. I think that a lot of peoples incubation problems occur from the failure to supress the uncontrolable desire to candle eggs every 15 minutes, lol. Quote:

I totally agree that there are often several paths to reach the same destination. In my situation, I'm taking my route for a couple of reasons. First off, I have either been lucky, or blessed, that the stock that I'm currently working with is actually very good, and achieving birds that conform...

I'm probably in the minority on this issue, but I'm building my flock in the diametrically opposite direction. I want excellent conformation, color, and type on my birds first. I'll sacrifice a little egg color to have correct birds. All one has to do is look around at different flocks of these...

Bingo! Then throw in the "wildcard" of selective breeding for egg color while throwing overall type out the window, and it's a wonder that they aren't in worse shape than they're in. $$ cha-ching! $$. Quote:

I just hatched these a couple days ago and you can see the diversity of white coloring on their faces. Maybe it's just the particular lines/crosses that I'm working with, but they all usually mature out pretty much the same no matter what they started as. Also, I have never ended up with a mossy...

Thanks. I actually built it from an old wooden tool chest that I bought at a yard sale for 5 bucks. I use it as a hatcher. I used the leftover materials from the incubator that I built. Here's a pic of the incubator. [/img] And here's a pic of the tool chest with the viewing window cut out...

Accurate, simple, and direct to the point. I totally agree 100%. I have built my flock of BCM's usung birds from various sources, and I simply cull anything that doesn't look like I want it too. I have seen things both good and bad from many prominant breeder's birds. I don't care if I'm using...

Beautiful birds! I also have some Thom Dean birds in my line. His birds are big. If anyone needs to increase the overall size of their BCM flock, I would highly reccomend adding a Thom Dean bird or 2. Quote:

Thanks Drom. As far as feed goes, I agree 100% with your assesment of commercial layer feeds. They are designed for convenience, and geared toward commercial flocks. I feed all of my adult birds a quality gamebird/turkey grower with 23% protien. I also supplement feed a small amount of whole or...

I took a few pics of the BCM's yesterday. There are a couple pics of my humongous roo. He has, in my opinion, pretty good Marans type. His color is off a bit though. As a youngster, he started out almost totally black and started coloring in slowly as he got older. I'm happy with his hackle and...

Drom, I checked out your pics on your page, and in my opinion, your birds have excellent type, but some very minor color issues. I especially like the "bulk' of your birds, and the very nice tail carriage. From what I see, you are much farther along than a lot of other peoples birds that I have...

Thanks, these are from yesterday. Although they are slightly lighter than earlier in the cycle, they stay pretty constant. I've got the overall "type" of my birds where I want them, I just have to improve some on overal coloring of the roos, and try to get a little better egg color.[/img]
