My 2nd generation pullets just started laying.
I was not sure what they were going to do. The first few eggs they laid were of course tiny; they looked like bantam eggs
But they had a matte finish and the color wasn't anything to write home about. So, I was thinking hmmm
maybe they aren't going to lay like their moms do, and if not, where do I go from here? But, today I got my first egg from these girls that is fat and round and has that thick, glossy vivid red coating.
The eggs I have gotten most consistently are not the darkest maroon color like some eggs you see, but they have a really nice glossy vivid color and they are very round. So, I feel like I have something good to work with and now that I know the daughters have inherited the same characteristics their mom's have for laying these types of eggs (at least one of the daughters has) I'm excited to see what will happen in the 3rd gen.
My first gen stock was a clutch of 6 chicks which were the first gen offspring of two BCM lines. So they are all closely related but come from two lines.
I have one Rooster from this 2nd gen group that I am going to breed back to his mama and I have 3 papa roosters that I can breed the girls back to.
This is really fun stuff.
