the white chick from the wheaten marans i hatched seems to be feathering in like a wheaten but its way to soon to tell because they are only 10 days old and iv only hatched 3 out of 5 or so eggsfrom the mix but i do have 15 in the bator ready to hatch on the 9th
they are a mix of to great breeders ..... Henery and Davis.

I have a question,
I have two blue copper hens that came from a blue birchon they have clean legs. I have a nice Blue Copper Rooster with feathers on his legs, what will I get out of this batch?
Thanks,
Cheri

You should get Blue, Black and Splash babies from that cross, some with feathered legs and some with out, probably more of the latter since you have 2 clean legged hens. I am sorry I know nothing about Birchen and its traits or how it will show up in that cross, I hope someone that knows more can come by and give you more information.

The birchen pattern tends to breed forward I have noticed... I don't know what that will mean for the coppering ... I would expect and please correct me if I am wrong out there. That you may get offspring expressing both copper and the birchen. It will be interesting to see.. please post pictures in the future.

well i sure hope the eggs hatch ok , i have a ratio of 2 roo and 3 hens ,so the should b good . i wish i had more hens but out of the 30 eggs or so i started hatching for my flock i only got 3 hens that look good and 2 roosters but i am hatching as we speek and plan to have ten total in my flock and 5 in rotation in order to try to get the color darker in the eggs by back breeding if i can.

Blue copper x blue copper will produce black copper, blue copper, and splash copper offspring on average.

Silver/gold is a sex-linked gene, so hens can only have one copy of the gene. Therefore, a blue copper hen can't be carrying silver. If she came from a blue "birchen" roo, then that "birchen" roo was actually heterozygous -- carrying one copy of gold and one copy of silver. But the hen has to be one or the other (gold = blue copper, or silver = blue birchen). If a blue copper hen is mated with a true birchen roo (two copies of silver -- no gold), then they will produce blue "birchen" male offspring that are actually split silver/gold, and blue birchen female offspring.

Everybody needs to remember that ALL "black copper" Marans have the birchen trait, since the black copper pattern is BASED on birchen (ER). The main difference between black copper and birchen birds is the presence of silver or gold. And a lot of "birchen" birds are carrying gold, so there's a lot of mixed flocks out there!

Thank you Amazondoc!

I am going to have to write that down as I know about Black Coppers carrying that trait, I just can't gather my thoughts to explain it as nicely as you did. There is so much to learn and retain by way of genetics, it can be very confusing and for me that is a very short trip.

Thanks again, I always look forward to reading your posts, I learn alot from them.
