Very nice flock.. really hard to argue with that egg color and nice hens... really good roo... Nice job!

My 2nd generation pullets just started laying.
I was not sure what they were going to do. The first few eggs they laid were of course tiny; they looked like bantam eggs

But they had a matte finish and the color wasn't anything to write home about. So, I was thinking hmmm

maybe they aren't going to lay like their moms do, and if not, where do I go from here? But, today I got my first egg from these girls that is fat and round and has that thick, glossy vivid red coating.

The eggs I have gotten most consistently are not the darkest maroon color like some eggs you see, but they have a really nice glossy vivid color and they are very round. So, I feel like I have something good to work with and now that I know the daughters have inherited the same characteristics their mom's have for laying these types of eggs (at least one of the daughters has) I'm excited to see what will happen in the 3rd gen.

My first gen stock was a clutch of 6 chicks which were the first gen offspring of two BCM lines. So they are all closely related but come from two lines.

I have one Rooster from this 2nd gen group that I am going to breed back to his mama and I have 3 papa roosters that I can breed the girls back to.
This is really fun stuff.

I saved the darkest egg she sent me (Pic has flash on, it was really a little darker) I am pretty sure the first chick that hatched who came out of this egg is a Roo -because he is sooo full of attitude already and getting huge. They are a little over a week old now.

Have you found that your Pene eggs have a more brown hue than your Marans eggs? Seems like the ones I have seen have a more brown as opposed to red hue.

had a wheaten marans chick hatch out with white down and 10 days old and still whiter then others .... is that any sign of anything ?
i thought they were always yellow in color like the 30 i hatched in my short time with marans ...

Wow, there is someone else on another thread right now who has exact same thing. John in Washington got a light colored chick out of his BCM stock that does not look yellow. He looks white and everyone has been trying to figure out what he is.

Oh, woops, you said Wheaten stock. I didn't notice. Well, they might both be Wheatens.
